STATEN ISLAND -- Since more than half of New York's small businesses still lack professional websites, Google wants to help fledgling companies get online.
So if you own a small business and aren't Web savvy or simply haven't gotten around to setting up a website, you'll want to attend the Google-sponsored "Get Your Business Online" event on Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn, Bloomfield.
Attendees of the event will learn how to build a professional website. In addition, Google will give attendees a free customized domain name, web hosting for one year and a local business listing on Google Maps. "Some small business owners who attend will be those who want to upgrade their websites, and others will need a whole website built from scratch," said Becca Ginsberg, a Google spokeswoman.
After a similar Google event in Albany last year, Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) urged Google to host these events across the city. "It is an important priority to get small businesses online so they can harness the power of the internet to grow and add jobs," he said. "Google's events will connect small businesses with new customers by teaching businesses how to get online quickly and easily. Small businesses are the driving force behind New York City's economic growth and I am thrilled to see that Google is bringing this successful seminar to the tri-state region."
Google believes that a website that's easy to find translates into new customers and more sales of products and services. "We are pleased to be working with Sen. Schumer and other N.Y. leaders to help make it fast, easy and free for New York City businesses to get online," said Susan Molinari, Google vice president of public policy and former Staten Island congresswoman.
According to Google, 97 percent of people in the U.S. research local products and services online, yet 58 percent of small businesses nationwide -- and 53 percent in New York state -- have no website.
The event stems from a Google coalition, which includes Intuit and SCORE, as well as Small Business Development Centers throughout the city. The coalition was designed to give small businesses the technology, resources and expertise they need to get online.
At the event, Google will hold workshops about running a business online and on search engine marketing.
