How The Top 100 Brands Perform In The Apple App Store

DistimoCorporate300pxIn this month's report, app store analytics firm Distimo examined how the top 100 global brands approach the Apple App Store and how well they perform. Not surprisingly, most now have a presence there - in fact, only 12 do not. The most successful brands in terms of downloads are also not a huge shocker: Apple, Disney, Facebook, Google and eBay.

Birthday Cake With The Captain, Balinese Beds ... - Cruise Specialists

For those who want to sleep under the stars, SeaDream offers the opportunity on the yacht?s trademark Balinese beds. ??Ralph Grizzle

Yesterday, I reached an age that you might often see on the highways of America, 55, an age equivalent to the speed limit on some of the roads that cross our country. It?s good to know that I haven?t reached the maximum speed limit, so there?s still time to find new roads and put the pedal to the metal on those.

Five and a half decades after I emerged into this world, my significant other and I spent a wonderful day in Cartagena, Spain, a clean city with beautiful architecture, lots of shops and caf?s, and fortresses surrounding the harbor.?We walked a busy pedestrian-only street for an hour or so, returned to SeaDream I for a nice lunch outside in the warm glow of the sun, then after a short rest, walked down the gangway steps to straddle mountain bikes for an hour and a half ride along the seafront and beyond.

On my birthday, Monica and I enjoyed dinner with the captain. @ 2012 Mikee

Dinner was at the captain?s table, which we shared with three others, all of them nice folks with interesting stories to tell. I asked Captain Johan Dyrnes about his job, and I would suspect that other captains would be envious.

He works two months, then has two months off, when he returns to his wife and children in Norway and where he operates two restaurants.

When on duty, he?s able to get off the yacht often to lead complimentary active excursions for guests, and since joining SeaDream, he has become a bike enthusiast. He told us about some of his rides in various ports, including a challenging three-hour ride to the summit of a mountain in beautiful Port Vendres, France.

After learning about all of his adventures, it almost sounded as if the captain were on vacation instead of at work. But that, I suppose, is the nature of yachting. The relaxed nature of his job seems to permeate the onboard culture for both the passengers and the crew, but don?t get me wrong, it?s relaxed, not unprofessional.

Captain Dyrnes also told us about about the freedom he enjoys as a captain in not having to stick to rigid itineraries, especially departure times from ports. He?s been working on ships since the 1980s for a variety of companies, including Crystal, Seabourn, NCL and others, so he knows what it?s like to work cruise lines where big corporations wield a heavy hand.

He told us a story about how SeaDream was docked next to another small luxury vessel in a port in the south of France. Bad weather was in the forecast outside the protected harbor, so Captain Dyrnes decided to stay put and extend the stay in port. The other small ship had to leave, because authorization to stay longer had to be cleared with the corporate offices back in the States, and those offices had closed for the evening.

The freedom that Captain Dyrnes enjoys further differentiates how SeaDream stands alone in its niche. As stated in a previous post, it?s important to wrap your head around the fact that this is yachting, not cruising.

That said, there are some drawbacks that come with yachting, when compared to small, luxury cruise ships, notably: 1) staterooms do not feature balconies (access to the outdoors is nearby, but you can?t step outside your stateroom into the open air); and 2) bathrooms are small (what you might expect on a yacht but about half the size of even the standard bathrooms on small, luxury ships).

Service, however, and cuisine (which I will write about later) measure up to SeaDream?s competitors. The spa and fitness area is well equipped, although the sauna and steamroom are small (the steamroom acccommodates only one person comfortably). The pool, on the other hand, is generously sized for a small ship.

What sets SeaDream apart for me comprises a long list. Surely, the availability of bicycles makes the list. The bicycles make for such a good way to see a destination. Monica and I covered a lot of ground quickly yesterday on our bikes. Also, the sports marina differentiates SeaDream. While anchored, the marina opens to allow guests to participate in a variety of water sports, all at no charge. That said, there are other vessels, including Seabourn?s ships, that have marinas.

Last night demonstrated one other key difference between SeaDream and other small, luxury ships. Monica and I slept outdoors under the stars in the light of a big moon.?Situated at the front of the yacht, the ultra-wide Balinese bed was beautifully made up when we walked up at about 11 p.m. in the custom-embroidered pajamas we?d recieved on the first evening. A bottle of champagne and two glasses had been prepared.

Another key difference was how quickly our night under the stars was arranged. At 8 p.m. we expressed our desire and less than 15 minutes later we learned that all had been confirmed ? our bed prepared and champagne chilling. It?s rare to hear ?no, it can?t be done? on SeaDream.

Monica and I sipped bubbly and talked late into the night under duvets that broke the chill of the refreshing sea breeze. We slept until 6:30 a.m., when a light rain prompted us to retreat to our statrerooms. It was certainly a night to remember, a night of sea breezes and, of course, sea dreams.

Stocks edge higher, breaking a weeklong slump

NEW YORK (AP) ? A weak showing in home sales and a mixed batch of earnings reports kept stocks flipping between minor gains and losses on Wall Street. By the end of the day, the major indexes managed to eke out their second day of gains this week.

A strong profit report from Procter & Gamble helped indexes start higher early Thursday, but stocks weakened in late morning trading after a realtor group said that the pace of contracts for new home sales had leveled off.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 26.34 points to close at 13,103.68.

"This is a market still working through a difficult earnings season," said Jason Pride, the director of investment strategy for Glenmede, a wealth-management firm.

Pride said investors probably celebrated too much after the Federal Reserve pledged more support for the economy in early September. They overlooked shrinking economies in Europe, slower growth in China and other signs that this earnings season would be rough. In the past two weeks, they've paid for it.

"We had a party and now we're dealing with a hangover," he said. "The market is basically back to where it was at the end of August. I don't think that's unreasonable."

In other trading, the Standard & Poor's 500 rose 4.22 points to 1,412.97 and the Nasdaq gained 4.42 points to 2,986.12.

A recent round of weak corporate earnings from tech giants and industrial companies has shaken investors accustomed to steadily rising profits. Weak revenue numbers and lowered profit projections from Caterpillar, 3M and Google have rattled the stock market.

After two days in which the Dow has dropped more than 200 points in the past week, the average of 30 big companies is now down 2.5 percent for October.

Among companies reporting earnings Thursday, infant formula maker Mead Johnson Nutrition plunged 9 percent after its revenue came in well below what Wall Street analysts had expected. The company also cut its forecast for full-year earnings. Its stock slumped $5.98 to $63.53.

Profits at United Airlines slid with fewer people flying, and the company's results fell short of Wall Street's forecasts. Its stock lost $1.01 to $19.26.

Most homebuilders fell after the pace of growth in housing sales slowed last month. PulteGroup fell 44 cents to $17.01. Toll Brothers dropped $1.04 to $34.21.

Procter & Gamble posted the strongest gains of any Dow stock, after the consumer products company, whose products include Tide, Gillette and Charmin, posted earnings that beat analysts' estimates. P&G rose $1.99 to $70.07.

Online game maker Zynga jumped 26 cents to $2.39 after the company reported revenue that was stronger than analysts had anticipated. The company also said it would cut costs and enter the gambling business.

Health insurer Aetna rose 48 cents to $44.43 after reporting a slight gain in third-quarter earnings. Higher revenue and lower-than-expected health care claims helped the company beat Wall Street's profit expectations.

Traders sold U.S. government bonds, sending yields higher. The benchmark 10-year U.S. Treasury note yielded 1.82 percent, up from 1.79 percent late Wednesday.

Nepal Women v Sri Lanka Women ? Asian Cricket Council Women's ...

Nepal Women v Sri Lanka Women ? Asian Cricket Council Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup (Group B) ? Match Update

Sri Lanka Women skipper Shashikala Siriwardene led from the front with a useful all-round performance, and guided her team to a 20-run victory over the Nepal Women in their Group B match during the ongoing Asian Cricket Council Women's Twenty20 Asia Cup, at the Guanggong International Cricket Stadium in Guangzhou, China, today on October 25.

The Sri Lanka Women won the toss and elected to bat first ? however, the efforts of the Nepal Women skipper Rubina Chhetry (4-0-7-4) and Sonu Khadka (4-0-19-2) ensured that the Lankan Women were not allowed to proceed beyond a final total of 78.

The Sri Lanka Women opened their innings with Inoka Galagedara (2) and Yasoda Mendis (3), but both were ineffective and fell prey to Chhetry ? the former was trapped lbw by Chhetry in the second over, while the latter was caught and bowled by the Nepal Women skipper.

Chamari Atapattu (7) followed in the very next over, caught out by Nepal Women wicketkeeper Mamta Thapa off Khadka, and by this point, the Sri Lanka Women were at 16 for 3. However, the team received some respite with the innings of skipper and Player of the Match Siriwardene, who top-scored for the team with 23, in addition to setting up a 19-run partnership with Sandamali Dolawatte (11).

After the latter was dismissed at the hands of Sarita Magar in the 12th over, Siriwardene kept the innings moving forward with a 26-run stand for the 5th wicket with wicketkeeper batter Dilani Manodara (15).Their combined efforts got the team up to 61 by the 17th over, after which Karuna Bhandari finally succeeded in dislodging Siriwardene.

From there onwards, the batters registered mediocre performances ? Eshani Kaushalya (8) was sent packing by Khadka in the 19th over, and the final over saw both Manodara and Chamani Seneviratna (2) dismissed by Chhetry. By the end of 20 overs, the Sri Lanka Women posted a final total of 78.

While the target was anything but daunting, the Nepal Women were undone by the assaults of Sri Lanka?s Siriwardene (4-0-8-2) and Dolawatte (4-1-8-2), in addition to their own shoddy running, which led to four dismissals via run out.

None of the Nepal Women managed to reach the double digit mark, and the highest score was Sita Rana Magar?s 9. Registering a string of unremarkable performances, the Nepal Women batters crumbled one by one, and by the end of 20 overs, found themselves at 58, with the Sri Lanka Women going on to claim a 20-run win.

Foreclosure wave cost neighbors $2 trillion

By John W. Schoen, NBC News

The economic impact of the housing bust on homeowners who live near a foreclosed property comes to about $2 trillion, according to a new accounting by a consumer advocacy group.

In a report released Wednesday, the Center for Responsible Lending estimates that more than half of that ?spillover loss? occurred in communities of color, which the study?s authors define as census tracts where more than 50 percent of the residents are Hispanic, African-American?or?otherwise?non-white. Those losses, the authors note, reflect the high concentrations of foreclosures in those neighborhoods.

The study looked only at the indirect impact of foreclosures on properties within one-eighth of a mile of a home in foreclosure. The total loss of home equity since the housing market collapsed is more like $7 trillion, the consumer advocacy group said. That figure ?doesn't?include additional indirect costs.

?Communities with high concentrations of foreclosures lose tax revenue and incur the financial and ?non-financial costs of abandoned properties and neighborhood blight, while homeowners living in close proximity to foreclosures suffer loss of wealth through depreciated home values,? the report?s authors wrote.

Related: New-home sales jump to two-year high

Households near a foreclosed property lost or will lose an average $21,077 in wealth or about 7.2 percent of their home value, the report found. In minority neighborhoods, the families lost an average of $37,084 or 13.1 percent of their home value.

To arrive at its estimate, the group combined statistics collected by the government, Mortgage Bankers Association and a private database maintained by Lender Processing Services, a company that provides services to mortgage lenders.

Related:?Are you still having mortgage trouble with your bank?

The authors note that over time some of the losses inflicted by the spillover effect of foreclosures will be offset by rising home prices. The estimate covers foreclosures started between 2007 and 2011.

The pace of home new foreclosure filings has been falling this year, falling 7 percent in September compared with the previous month and down 16 percent from September 2011, according to RealtyTrac, a research firm. That was the lowest total since July 2007.

CNBC's Diana Olick discusses the latest housing reports.

Shark falls from sky onto Calif. golf course

(AP) ? Golf club employees in Southern California came to the rescue when a shark dropped out of the sky and flopped around on the 12th tee.

San Juan Hills Golf Club operations director Melissa McCormack says a course marshal found the leopard shark Monday afternoon and brought it to the clubhouse. It had puncture wounds where it appeared a bird had snagged it from the Pacific Ocean, about five miles away.

They stuck the approximately 2-pound shark into fresh water before somebody remembered it came from the sea, so they got some sea salt from the kitchen and mixed it in.

Another employee rushed the shark to the ocean where McCormack says it was very still for a few seconds before twisting around and speeding off.

NASA sees active region on the sun emit another flare

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? The sun emitted a significant solar flare on Oct. 22, 2012, peaking at 11:17 p.m. EDT. The flare came from an active region on the left side of the sun that has been numbered AR 1598, which has already been the source of a number of weaker flares. This flare was classified as an X1.8-class flare.

"X-class" denotes the most intense flares, while the number provides more information about its strength. An X2 is twice as intense as an X1, an X3 is three times as intense, and on. An X-class flare of this intensity can cause degradation or blackouts of radio communications for about an hour.

Solar flares are powerful bursts of radiation. Harmful radiation from a flare cannot pass through Earth's atmosphere to physically affect humans on the ground, however -- when intense enough -- they can disturb the atmosphere in the layer where GPS and communications signals travel. This can disrupt radio signals for anywhere from minutes to hours.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association, which is the United States government's official source for space weather forecasts and alerts, categorized the radio blackout associated with this flare as an R3, on a scale from R1 to R5. It has since subsided.

Increased numbers of flares are quite common at the moment, since the sun's normal 11-year activity cycle is ramping up toward solar maximum, which is expected in 2013. Humans have tracked this solar cycle continuously since it was discovered in 1843, and it is normal for there to be many flares a day during the sun's peak activity. The first X-class flare of the current solar cycle occurred on Feb. 15, 2011 and there have been 15 X-class flares total in this cycle, including this one. The largest X-class flare in this cycle was an X6.9 on Aug. 9, 2011. This is the 7th X-class flare in 2012 with the largest being an X5.4 flare on March 7.

This flare did not have an associated Earth-directed coronal mass ejection (CME), another solar phenomenon that can send solar particles into space and affect electronic systems in satellites and on Earth.

SEO ? To Outsource or Not?

Top Outsourcing SEO Companies
Women entrepreneurs who run an online business often reach a stage where they ask this question: Whether to outsource SEO or not??

?

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is a science for positioning websites high in web search results. It takes time and is often frustrating for working entrepreneurs.

?

Can you do SEO yourself?

?

Yes, you can as long as you are aware of the search engine updates.

?

Anyone, a newbie or an experienced SEO expert, looking to optimize a website for search engines should be knowledgeable of the latest (algorithm) changes carried out by the search companies.

?

You can realize the importance of keeping yourself updated in SEO by the statement of Matt Cutts, head of Google Webspam team, ?in which he hints that Google releases more than 500 algorithm changes a year.

?

If you are focusing on old techniques and constantly ignoring basics of SEO, you may harm your chances of ranking well with searches and getting subsequent organic traffic.

?

So, if you are thinking of optimizing your website yourself, you need to take it serious and learn the basics of Search Engine Optimization. The Importance of a Great Business Card for Branding Your ...

You never get a second chance to make a first impression.? What does that mean in today?s fast-paced, technology driven business environment?? It means business cards with high impact are still important.

A traditional design on white card stock means your business card gets lost in the shuffle of the competition.? In order to be memorable, your business card must have a unique, sleek design.? There are plenty of modern materials to choose from, including metal, fabric or glass.

To really make your brand stand out, don?t be afraid to try different fonts, colors and graphics.? Use texture and dimension too.? The longer people a potential client holds your business card and interacts with it, the more your brand and your business will be remembered.

I recently ordered metal business cards from My Metal Business Cards.?? The owner, Craig Martyn was very helpful about giving me several options and making changes based on my feedback.? When I hand out my new metal business card, I ALWAYS get an enthusiastic response, ?Wow, nice cards!? and ?Where did you get those business cards??? What?s really important about my new metal business cards is that people never throw them away.

Among those who carry metal business cards is Steve Wozniak, the entrepreneur that co-founded Apple with Steve Jobs.? Steve?s business card uses an eye-catching geometric design etched into a metal card.

With all the distraction of technology and media, your business card needs to be distinct to have a lasting impact. ? Try a non-traditional business card made of a unique material like metal. ? Every time you hand out your business card, your company will be associated with innovation and your brand will make a lasting impression.

Odierno Shares Views on Military's Relationship With Media

Odierno Shares Views on Military?s Relationship With Media

By David Vergun
Army News Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 22, 2012 ? The biggest challenge in the relationship between the military and the media is working together in an uncertain environment in an age of instant communication, the Army?s chief of staff said here Oct. 19.

Gen.?Ray Odierno shared his views on military-media relations in remarks and a question-and-answer session with about 60 journalists attending the 10th annual Military Reporters and Editors Conference.

?As we move forward, and as I look at what?s going on around the world, the ability to communicate instantaneously is only going to get faster and faster and faster, and the ability to report is going to get faster and faster and faster,? he said. ?And, the pressure requirements on you and as well as me to understand the environment on what?s going on is going to become more important as well. You have to get the story in quickly to be able to publish what you think you?re seeing.?

In this fast-paced environment, Odierno said, it is inevitable that first reports out will be wrong about 50 percent of the time, due to a variety of circumstances. He said it is up to the military to follow up on those first reports by getting the most accurate information back out to the reporters as the facts become known and available.

?This requires a good interchange, strong relationships and trust to do that,? he added. In his experience, the general said, that bond of trust does exist.

?A large majority of [media] people I?ve associated with over my 36 years in the Army have been very professional,? Odierno said. ?I don?t ever remember a time when that trust was broken, and I think that?s important. And, I really, really do appreciate that, and that?s the kind of relationship we want to continue as we move forward.?

Trust works both ways, he added. The military must provide reporters with all the correct facts they need for their stories in a timely manner, he said, and must rely on reporters, in turn, to maintain operational security.

?Off-the-record sessions were some of the best sessions I?ve had with reporters,? he said. ?It gave me the opportunity to discuss what?s on my mind, and they discovered and discussed things with me that I didn?t know that enabled me to do my job better.?

Odierno said the Army must continue to reach out to the media.

?We?re going to engage and outreach with you and have a relationship with you here, overseas, during training events, no matter where it is, during tough problems and good problems,? he said. ?We?re going to build a relationship and work together to get you the right facts so your stories are reported accurate, important and cutting-edge.?

The Army?s relationship with the media has evolved in positive ways, Odierno said, as it now works more closely with reporters and is evolving away from the embedded approach, in which reporters cover warfare with a specific unit. ?I think sometimes the media feels trapped,? he explained, ?because the military says when and where they go and don?t go.?

The media are moving around more and building networks, he added, but safety and security considerations sometimes will require reporters to embed with units.

Odierno said he has genuine positive feelings for the media.

?As corps commander in Iraq and then Multinational Force Iraq commander, I was impressed with the heroism [of the media] as I watched many people operate, putting their own personal safety at risk, to deliver news to people back in the United States. I learned to respect that,? the general said.

The chief of staff admitted that his own efforts to report the news have been less than successful. He said he?s had a Facebook page since he served in Iraq, but that his audience is mostly internal. He has had more success reaching an audience outside the Army, he said, with the recent launch of his Twitter account, @GenRayOdierno.

The question-and-answer session touched on a variety of topics, including the new U.S. defense strategy that focuses on the Asia-Pacific region. Odierno said the Army is establishing programs of multilateral engagements throughout that region, including training exercises and humanitarian missions. It is crucial to build more transparency with China, he added, and he held out the possibility that some multinational exercises could include China.

He also touched on the Army?s professionalism.

?We have a battle-hardened, battle-tested leader capability that will give us an advantage as we look and adjust to the future,? he said, adding that the Army will need these leaders as it adjusts to a more complex world environment.

?What we ask our captains and our lieutenant colonels today is a lot harder than what I had to do when I was a captain or lieutenant colonel, because the world is more complex and difficult, and the challenges they?re going to face are more difficult,? he said. ?They?re adaptive leaders who mix the science and art of war together to come up with the right solutions at the right time.?

Lynch Creek Wreaths: A Holiday Decorating Guide

For Those who Want to Add Something Special to the Holiday Season

With all the craziness of the holiday season, decorating can either be fun, or an expensive chore that takes time away from family. Everyone has had experiences of both stress and joy while decorating their home in preparation of the holiday season. A lot of this stress comes from a misunderstanding of the basics of holiday decoration.

Decorating your home during the holidays should not be a chore. It should be done with family, adding a special ambiance and flavor to your residence that evokes feelings of warmth and togetherness. This is especially true if you are hosting holiday a large family gathering or holiday event. This is where a great deal of the stress comes from. While family is loving and supportive, we can often get wrapped up in our heads regarding every single detail.

You first step is to stop and breathe. You must realize that decorating is festive and fun, and your family will not judge you for it. While you may freak out over every single decorative detail, those you invite into your home will likely just be happy to be around the holiday feeling you have created.

Now that you are hopefully calm, you can focus on the details of how you would like to decorate your home. While we are all aware of Christmas tree decoration and Christmas lights, we should move along to less used, yet still traditional forms of decoration. Selecting the type of decoration is your primary goal, for everything else will fall into place quite gracefully. We will examine three popular decorating items and their use within the home.

1) Holiday Wreaths

To expert decorators, Christmas and holiday wreaths are a no-brainer. Wreaths are wildly popular and are your outward expression of the season at the entrance to your home. Holiday wreaths are stunning and produce a fresh aroma that brings out strong holiday feelings in nearly everyone. While holiday wreaths express your festive nature to the outside world, you experience its beauty every time you enter and exit your home.

To select a quality holiday wreath, you should ask which evergreens are used, the weight of the wreath, and how long their wreaths typically last. These three factors will give you a good indication as to the quality of the holiday wreath. Wreath upkeep is relatively easy as well. You should place the wreath in a highly visible location that does not receive a lot of direct sunlight, and water the evergreen boughs regularly with a spray bottle. These tips will ensure your holiday wreath will last through the entire season.

2) Centerpieces

Centerpieces are the indoor equivalent of the holiday wreath, as they are also filled with evergreens that emit a marvellous seasonal aroma that fills the dining room the same way the Christmas tree fills the living room. Centerpieces are typically placed on the dining room table and are the focal point of the room

Centerpieces are wonderful holiday decorations because they are ever-present and are the focus of every meal during the holidays. They are especially useful if you are hosting a family event that involves a large meal. Make sure the centerpiece is the appropriate size for the table, not taking up so much space that it becomes gaudy or so small that it is lost in the mix. Centerpiece upkeep is also simple, and can be treated much like a potted plant that should receive regular watering to keep it moist.

3) Holiday Garland

While wreaths and centerpieces are more widely used, garland is a great option for those looking to go the extra mile. Garland is used in elongated areas such as banisters, fireplaces, and staircases. Garland is very versatile, and can be placed both indoors and outside, typically used externally on fencing, along walkways, and in areas where there are Christmas lights. Garland adds a special flair and is inexpensive for the stunning appearance it provides. Much like wreaths and centerpieces, they are made with fresh, living evergreens and should be watered regularly for longevity.

This is the Verizon HTC DLX

HTC Verizon

Ladies and gentlemen, meet the HTC DLX for Verizon. A few rumored details recently emerged about this upcoming (and as yet unannounced Android smartphone, and tonight we're able to bring you the first pictures.

The HTC DLX is notable for several reasons. For one, it will (assuming it comes to market; that's not always a given) be Verizon's first HTC smartphone since the HTC One line was announced at Mobile World Congress way back in February in Barcelona. That the United States' largest carrier didn't pick up any of the three devices announced then has been a sore spot for months.

Then there's the size. Along with the Japan-exclusive HTC J Butterfly, the HTC DLX marks the manufacturer's first foray into the 5-inch display category, known to some as "ridiculously large." But consider our curiosity piqued, our appetite whetted. We -- and you folks as well, we know - have been waiting on Verizon to sport new HTC kit for the better part of a year now.

Enough preamble. We've got more pictures, specs and a few thoughts after the break.

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the Man

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManSome rules were made to be broken, especially when those rules were created by people trying to take control of your gadgets and internet. Here are ten ways we love to disregard authority in the name of freedom.

10. Bypass Web Filters at Work

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManIf you have a job that tries to limit your internet slacking?or, as we like to call them, productive surfing breaks?you can often get around their heavy-handed web filters with a simple proxy server at home. You might also want to see if you're being monitored at work and make sure you're covering your tracks, too. Photo by Diego Cervo (Shutterstock).

9. Stop Advertisers from Tracking You

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManEveryone's trying to track you on the web and serve you targeted ads. If you don't like the sound of that, there are a lot of ways to keep those companies at bay. All it really takes is a few browser extensions, including an ad blocker to block the ads, Ghostery to block the tracking cookies, a script blocker for other trackers, and Do Not Track Plus that keeps third-party sites (like Facebook and Google+) from invading the one you're currently on.

8. Get Free Repairs Without a Warranty

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManExtended warranties are rarely worth the money, and are often just a money grab on the part of the retailer or manufacturer. But, sometimes your gadget breaks?possibly through no fault of your own?when your warranty's up, and you need to get a repair. Instead of succumbing to costly repairs, you can often get the manufacturer to fix your gadget with a few simple tricks?from the built-in warranty on your credit card to more evil plans like playing dumb. Title image remixed from sirikul and DinoZ (Shutterstock).

7. Escape Paywalls with Clever Workarounds

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManWhile everyone deserves to get paid for their work, sometimes you just need one or two articles from a paywalled source, or you go over your free quota at the end of the month. Luckily, there are quite a few tricks for getting around paywalls, the easiest being to just search out the article on Google. Other sites, like the New York Times, are popular enough that you can find a few site-specific hacks around the net that'll help you out. Of course, if you find yourself using these more than occasionally, we recommend signing up for an account, or that news source might not be around in the future.

6. Rip Copy-Protected Movies for At-Home Playback Anywhere

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManIt's absurd that DVDs and Blu-Rays are so heavily copy protected that you can't even rip them for your own at-home legitimate uses. Luckily, all you need is a bit of ripping software to get the job done. Check our our guide to ripping DVDs and our separate guide for Blu-Rays to get those movies onto your hard drive, for picture-perfect playback on your kickass home media center.

5. Access Blocked Content from Another Country

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManSometimes, a web service you want to use just isn't available in your country. Whether you want to get around NBC's horrible coverage of the Olympics or just get your Hulu fix from outside the US, you have a few choices. Generally, the best way to do it is with a VPN. We've shown you how to use this before with Spotify, but the general idea should work with any country or service. Just note the country whose content you're trying to access and find a VPN that works for you. You should no trouble accessing that blocked content when you're done.

4. Keep Others from Thwarting Your File Sharing

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManWhether you're downloading an innocent Linux disc or sharing something a bit more evil, you'll want to stop those trying to rain on your parade. That means encrypting your connection to stop your ISP from throttling you, and using a proxy or VPN to keep anyone else from snooping on your traffic. You may even want to try a private tracker, which should increase your speeds and the quality of the files you get, while giving you a bit more protection against The Man. Image remixed from an original by Nomad_Soul/Shutterstock.

3. Get Rid of DRM On Your Movies, Music and Ebooks

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManWhen you buy media online, it often comes protected with DRM, so you're forced only to use it in the way iTunes, Amazon, or whoever else intended. If you want to listen to your pre-2009, DRMed music on a non-Apple device, watch your movies in something other than iTunes, or read your books on a device other than your Kindle, there are ways to remove the DRM. Removing it from music usually means lowering the quality, but a number of programs can get the job done (though they do cost money). Removing it from movies requires a program too, and will usually run you about $40 to $50?though it makes up its cost if you use it enough. Kindle books are a little easier, requiring nothing but the free Calibre ebook management software to convert them to something readable. The best solution? Buy from a source that doesn't use DRM, and you'll be much happier.

2. Build a Hackintosh Instead of Buying a Mac

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManLike OS X but don't want to shell out for one of Apple's insanely expensive, uncustomizable computers? Build a desktop PC and hack it to run OS X instead. It's shockingly easy to do these days, will save you a ton of money, and give you much more room to configure your hardware and upgrade it later on. If you're looking for something more akin to a Mac Mini, you can build a small, inexpensive Hackintosh too.

1. Jailbreak or Root Your Phone

Top 10 Ways to Disregard Authority and Stick It to the ManTired of being told what you can and can't do with your own phone? It's time to jailbreak it. If you're on iOS, jailbreaking is pretty easy as long as you have the right version of iOS, and it allows you to do all sorts of awesome things: customize the interface, play classic video games, or even tether your internet for free. Android users have to go through the somewhat more complicated process of rooting, but then you have serious access to the ins and outs of your device. Apart from awesome root-only apps, you can flash custom versions of Android called ROMs, get better battery life with a new kernel, or just speed the darn thing up with some deep settings tweaks. Whatever you do, you'll wonder how you ever lived without jailbreaking or rooting.
