US Expected to Increase Aid to Syrian Rebels

The Obama administration's next step in aid to Syrian rebels is expected to be a broader package of nonlethal assistance, but expanding from food and medical supplies to body armor and night-vision goggles, as the U.S. grapples for ways to stem the bloodshed from Syria's civil war.

However, President Barack Obama has not given final approval on any new package and an announcement is not imminent, a senior administration official said. The U.S. continues to oppose directly arming the Syrian rebels, in part out of fear that the weapons could fall into the hands of rebels like those who have allied themselves with al-Qaida in Iraq.

Secretary of State John Kerry hinted at the new nonlethal aid package this week, saying the administration had been holding intense talks on how to boost assistance to the rebels fighting forces loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad.

"Those efforts have been very much front and center in our discussions in the last week in Washington," Kerry said Tuesday, a day before meeting with Syrian opposition leaders in London. "I'm not sure what the schedule is, but I do believe that it's important for us to try to continue to put the pressure on President Assad and to try to change his calculation."

During Wednesday's meeting, the Syrian opposition leaders asked Kerry and other top Western diplomats specifically for military equipment, according to a senior State Department official who was present.

Kerry told them that the U.S. was looking at different options to help the rebels, but made no promises about any specific types of future aid, said the official, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly on the meeting and demanded anonymity.

Kerry also urged the opposition to organize itself better and said he'd attend a meeting April 20 in Istanbul bringing together the Syrian opposition's big donor nations from Europe and the Arab world.

The United Nations estimates more than 70,000 people have been killed during more than two years of fighting between rebels and government forces.

Britain and France have already been shipping armor, night-vision goggles and other military-style equipment to the rebels.

Earlier this year, the U.S. announced a $60 million nonlethal assistance package for Syria that includes meals and medical supplies for the armed opposition. The aid package marked the first direct American assistance to the opposition forces trying to overthrow Assad. It was greeted unenthusiastically by some rebel leaders, who said it did far too little.

While the Obama administration continues to resist arming the rebels, the U.S. has said it would not stand in the way of other nations that decide to take that step.

Senior officials from the White House, State Department and Pentagon held a high-level meeting Friday that focused on Syria.

Among those who attended Kerry's meeting in London Wednesday were the Syrian opposition's interim prime minister, Hassan Hitto; Vice Presidents Suheir Atassi and George Sabra; Secretary-General Najib Ghadbian and the opposition's envoys to the United States and Britain.

Kerry then met one-on-one with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov for talks on the Syrian civil war. The U.S. and Russia have frequently been at odds over the conflict in Syria, with Moscow opposing action at the U.N. Security Council that would increase pressure on Assad.

The State Department official said Russia offered no indication that it was softening its position on Syria. Kerry reiterated the U.S. preference for a political solution that includes Assad leaving power, the official said, and agreed to continuing discussing the situation in Syria with Lavrov and other top diplomats during an evening meeting of the Group of Eight industrialized nations.

My Not So Perfect {and yet perfect} Family Tree

Family Tree

My parents are the kind of people you want to be your neighbors. They are nice to everyone they meet and will always welcome you into their house for dinner. Granted my mom will worry sick over the fact that the house wasn?t clean enough and she?d apologize a hundred times for either not having enough for everyone to be gluttonous at the table or for the laundry basket full of clothes that you can barely see at the end of the hallway and my dad would diagnose any car troubles you were having by just listening to your engine in the driveway. But from the moment you arrive they?ll spoil you silly. I love that about them. My in-laws are the exact same way. My husband and I are lucky to still have both our parents and to not have the struggles of divorce in our pasts. They have left us with a rich heritage to use as the foundation for our marriage and our parenting.
?
However, I remember a specific day in college when I had the revelation that my parents weren?t perfect. They forgot to tell me :) That wasn?t mentioned when they were bending over backwards to take me to school functions and provide for my every need. I guess in my mind, I had set them up as the Mary Poppins of parents ? practically perfect in every way! When I encountered them as an adult and not through the eyes of a little girl, I saw their struggles and weaknesses. When I realized that my almost perfect parents weren?t in fact ? not perfect, I felt like my reality had been shifted. I saw their weaknesses, but even more than that I saw how God could work in them and through them in their weaknesses. I admit to struggling to grasp their imperfections when I had never noticed them before, but honestly, it made them more real to me and it opened the door to seeing how to interpret and live out their faith in life.

My husband and I spent some time in our relationship (almost 14? years now) discussing our perfect parents :) Not that we are sizing up their parenting at all ? just that we appreciated our upbringing and how we want to provide the safe, loving homes we grew up in for our two boys. We want to be intentional about one thing and that?s taking the opportunities to talk to our kids about our failures. Choosing to take a moment of weakness ? highlight it and then point our kids to the one and only perfect person in their lives ? their Creator. I don?t want them to see us striving to do anything other than loving our Savior and loving them.

There is a measuring stick for everything in life: your career, your house, your cars, your hobbies ? and the world is trying to size you up. Unfortunately, there is always someone willing to show you how you don?t meet the world?s expectations. There is never a shortage of places you can look to feel not good enough. But if you walk the road of life knowing you never will be perfect enough and that no one will ? you?ll cling to the only person you know who IS! And it just so happens, He is happy to be your landing pad in life.
?
To my Daddy & Momma and to my husband?s parents ? there would never be enough room in this blog to tell you how wonderful you each are or how MUCH you?ve given us. I am so grateful you aren?t perfect, but that you gave us each a chance to know the ONE who is!
?
P.S. ? these two little boys will have to wait a long time to see those imperfections you have ? they sure do love their grandparents and we are incredibly grateful.

What about you? How has your family heritage affected your marriage or how you parent? Even if you had a less than perfect family experience, the things you observed and the lessons you learned can positively influence how you move forward as a family.

Gunman who held four firefighters hostage in suburban Atlanta dead

Gwinnett County spokesperson Edwin Ritter tells the media that a flash-bang device was used, as there was concern for the firefighters safety, and that the gunman died after an exchange of gunfire during the rescue.

By Becky Bratu, Staff Writer, NBC News

A gunman who was holding four firefighters hostage outside of Atlanta was killed during a tactical operation, police said Wednesday.

Following a standoff, the Gwinnett County Police Department SWAT team entered the residence where a barricaded gunman was holding four firefighters hostage in Suwanee, Ga.

The gunman had taken five firefighters hostage but allowed one of them to leave to move the fire truck, police said.

As officers entered the home, a small explosion could be heard. Officials later said it was used to distract the suspect. The sound of gunfire followed.

One officer suffered a non life-threatening injury in the exchange, and the four firefighters have "superficial wounds," Gwinnett County Police Cpl. Edwin Ritter said. It is believed the suspect was killed by gunfire, he said.

The firefighters responded to a medical call with one fire truck and an ambulance around 3:41 p.m., police said. They came from a nearby station, officials said, and they were trained as both emergency medical technicians and paramedics.

Local NBC affiliate WXIA reported that the house where the firefighters were being held hostage was foreclosed on in November and is currently bank-owned.

Ritter said that once the firefighters were taken hostage, the suspect demanded his power, cable and cell phone be turned on.

Suwanee is a suburban community about 35 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Xiaomi Phone 2S and 2A announced with MIUI v5, the former entering Hong Kong and Taiwan

Xiaomi Phone 2S and 2A announced, bringing MIUI v5 and Krait 300 together

After selling 7.19 million phones in China last year, Xiaomi is now one step closer to world domination with a new device that'll take it to new territories: the Xiaomi Phone 2S (or MI-2S). As the name and look (pictured left) suggest, this is pretty much the same device as the 4.3-inch Xiaomi Phone 2, except it comes with Qualcomm's newer Snapdragon 600 quad-core chip clocked at 1.7GHz, plus a beefed up camera of 13-megapixel resolution (with F2.2 aperture) on the 32GB model. The 16GB 2S, on the other hand, gets the same old 8-megapixel F2.0 imager. The rest of the hardware is the same old: 2GB RAM, 2,000mAH removable battery, 720p IPS display, dual-mic noise cancellation, 2-megapixel front-facing camera and WCDMA 850/1900/2100MHz radio (there's also a CDMA version for China Telecom).

Unlike the previous launch, the 16GB flavor of this phone is already in stock on the day of announcement and is ready for purchase in China today for ¥1,999 or about $320 unsubsidized. Actually, strike that -- apparently the first lot of 200,000 units promptly sold out (likely no thanks to scalpers). Luckily, Xiaomi is finally tapping into the Hong Kong market via its xiaomi.hk website starting April 23rd, so chances are genuine buyers in Hong Kong won't have to compete against the machines from mainland China; and Taiwan customers will also be able to buy a 2S from either local carrier Far Eastone towards the end of this month, or from xiaomi.tw starting next month. No word on the availability of the 32GB model just yet, but it's already priced at ¥2,299 or about $370 unsubsidized.

Sequester Might Delay Justice for 9/11 Suspect

Sequestration budget cuts could stand between Osama bin Laden's son-in-law, Suleiman Abu Gaith, and a trial on American soil timed almost to match up with the anniversary of the September 11 attacks.

Judge Lewis Kaplan today said Abu Gaith could go on trial in federal court in Manhattan as early as September of this year, around the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks the suspect lauded in al-Qaeda videos. Gaith's lawyer protested, saying a September start might be too soon, because of sequester cuts to public defenders.

The judge said it would be unfortunate if sequestration issues interfered with a trial of this importance, and he agreed to appoint other lawyers to assist the federal defenders service.

The U.S. court system stands to lose almost $350 million to sequester cuts. Last month Judge Julia Gibbons, chair of the Judicial Conference Budget Committee, testified that leaving sequestration as is would "have a devastating effect on federal court operations nationwide."

"We believe we have done all we can to minimize the impacts of sequestration but a cut of this magnitude, particularly so late in the fiscal year, will affect every facet of court operations and impact the general public as well as individuals and businesses looking for relief in the courts," Gibbons told the House subcommittee on financial services and general government of the appropriations committee.

She warned the courts could face up to 2,000 layoffs or furloughs before September.

"In our defender services program, federal defender attorney staffing levels will decline which could result in delays in appointing defense counsel for defendants," Gibbons said.

Last week, the results of furloughs became visible as a federal public defenders' office in Maryland all but shut down, while elsewhere, some agencies have managed to delay staffing cuts until mid-April or later.

Republicans have criticized the president for his administration's decision to try Abu Gaith in a federal court, instead of a military tribunal at Guantanamo Bay.

ABC's Aaron Katersky and Ariane de Vogue contributed to this report.
