IBM: IT Organizations to Up Their Security Game ... - IT Business Edge

If 2012 is any indication of things to come, 2013 will be the year that IT organizations start implementing significantly more comprehensive approaches to managing security. According to Steve Robinson, vice president of worldwide development for strategy and product management within the newly formed IBM security systems division, roughly half the customers that IBM deals with have appointed a head of IT security in the last year.

Most of those appointments have been within the IT organization. But Robinson says a fair number of those people may also report into chief risk officers, the legal department and, in some rarer cases, the CEO. Their existence, says Robinson, is testimony to just how tough a year 2012 was in terms of securing the enterprise.

Rather than focusing all their efforts on perimeter security for 2013, IBM is predicting that we?ll see a number of strategic security initiatives, including:

  • Cloud security will go from "mystery and hype" to become a more routine activity.?
  • By the end of 2014, mobile devices will be more secure than laptops are today.
  • Compliance initiatives will be more tightly coupled to security.
  • The amount of data that will be collected to deal with advanced threats will increase.
  • Data scientists with security expertise will be in high demand.
  • Sharing of security data between government and the private sector will increase.
  • Aggressive mining of ?social dark channels? to identify potential targets will increase.

Perhaps the most surprising of those predictions is the level of security that will be found on mobile computing devices. Unlike previous generations of client devices, security concerns relating to mobile computing, especially in the context of transactions, will result in these devices becoming more secure than the average PC within the next two years.

The degree to which organizations will pursue these various initiatives, says Robinson, will be governed by their tolerance for risk. IBM is betting that as security as a whole becomes more complex to manage, IT organizations will decide to rely more on managed services provided via the cloud by providers such as IBM, which is one reason IBM is investing heavily in security intelligence software.

Whatever the eventual outcome, it?s pretty clear that IT organizations will need to significantly up their security game in 2013, if for no other reason than that multiple types of purveyors of malware already have.

Madonna lashes out at fans for smoking

Madonna performed at the National Stadium in Santiago, Chile, on Wednesday, Dec. 19.

By Anna Chan, TODAY

Hey, Madonna fans, if you love the pop idol, then put out that smelly cigarette!

The singer got plenty ticked off at fans who had lit up while she was doing soundcheck for the Santiago, Chile, show of her MDNA tour on Wednesday. She stopped midsong (as her umbrella turned inside out thanks to the unpleasant weather) to give them a piece of her mind.?

"There's people smoking right now. No smoking!" she complained. "If you're going to smoke cigarettes I'm not doing this show! $&#* you!"

When the superstar -- dressed in a big coat and scarf to stay warm -- still didn't get the result she wanted, she got serious.

"I'm not kidding. I can't sing if you smoke!" she declared. "You know what? If you love me, then don't smoke. No smoking. You're looking right at me while you're smoking cigarettes like I'm a stupid $&%*^@# idiot."?

The offenders must've put out the cigarettes eventually, because Madonna went on to perform that evening.

Thanks to fans with cell phones, the incident was recorded and made?available on?YouTube.

Chicago-Area Mayors Push For Illinois 'Assault Weapons' Ban ...

Chicago-Area Mayors Push For Illinois ?Assault Weapons? Ban Despite Rare Use In Crimes

??Assault weapon? is an invented term. In the firearm lexicon, there is no such thing as an ?assault weapon.? The closest relative is the ?assault rifle,? which is a machine gun or ?select fire? rifle that fires rifle cartridges. In most cases so-called ?assault weapons? are cosmetically similar to military guns but are functionally identical to and less powerful than hunting rifles.?

-GunFacts 6.1, a popular firearms reference book

As Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel and a handful of other predominantly suburban mayors pleaded for more gun ?control? yesterday- including a ban on ?assault weapons? in Illinois- here?s an interesting tidbit that both the Chicago Sun-Times and Chicago Tribune picked up on Thursday:

Only about 300 of the 7,000 firearms the Chicago Police Department has taken off the streets in 2012 would be classified as so-called assault weapons.

This according to Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy yesterday.

And, considering the strong push right now by Mayor Emanuel and these other politicians to ban these semi-automatic firearms, the question begs to be asked:

How many of the 518 murders in Chicago this year (per the Crime In Chicago blog this morning) were from ?assault weapons??

I suspect not many.

You see, according to the Congressional Research Service (who did tremendously-thorough research for me back when I was a U.S. Senate staffer) in a November 14 report on gun ?control? legislation:

According to a 1997 survey of 203,300 state and federal prisoners who had been armed during the commission of the crimes for which they were incarcerated, fewer than 1 in 50, or less than 2%, used, carried, or possessed a semiautomatic assault weapon or machine gun.

In other words, in these 200,000-plus crimes, ?assault weapons? were used less than 2 percent of the time.

This echoes other research I?ve come across showing usage of these guns in crimes and homicides is only in the single digits percentage-wise.

Informed parties on both sides of the gun ?control? debate have known this for some time now.

Therefore, is it no wonder that many Americans suspect this latest push to ban ?assault weapons?- now being taken up by some Chicago-area mayors- is not so much about the ?gun? as much as it is ?control??

Grover Norquist's Support For Plan B - Business Insider

One of the big events yesterday in the Fiscal Cliff debate was Grover Norquist's announcement that he would not consider it a violation of the Americans for Tax Reform pledge his politicians supported Boehner's Plan B, which would make permanent almost all of the Bush tax cuts, with the exception of those falling on earnings of $1 million or more.

In a statement, his group specifically said:

ATR has consistently maintained that individual Members of Congress make a pledge?to their constituents?to oppose and vote against tax increases.? The House this week will vote on a tax bill.? This legislation?popularly known as ?Plan B?--permanently prevents a tax increase on families making less than $1 million per year.? Republicans supporting this bill are this week affirming to their constituents in writing that this bill?the sole purpose of which is to prevent tax increases?is consistent with the pledge they made to them.? In ATR?s analysis, it is extremely difficult?if not impossible?to fault these Republicans? assertion.

The line of reasoning is basically: The vast majority of people are getting a permanently lower tax bill, and taxes only rise on those making $1 million for passive reasons. Nobody is voting for a tax hike. It's just what happens under current law.

The problem is: There is literally no logical reason why this would not apply to those making $250K or more, which is where Democrats would like to draw the line. Voting to extend the Bush tax cuts on everyone below $250K, and then letting the other taxes rise passively is by the same logic not voting for a tax cut.

The secret is that the pledge really has no bearing in this debate. There never has to be a vote to raise taxes. There are only votes that extend some tax cuts, while leaving others untouched.

With this, Norquist is exposing the fact that the pledge's relevance here was dicey to begin with.
