Reuters' Luke Baker on buidling a career as an international business

Luke Baker?s career has taken him all over the globe to report on everything from film festivals and football tournaments to the conflict in Congo and the Angolan Civil War.

Luke Baker, Reuters

Luke Baker, Reuters

Now Baker has landed in Brussels where he covers finance and politics and serves a bureau chief. He is also a co-author of ?Untold Stories from the Frontlines of the Iraq War.?

And though Baker says the methods that make successful journalists tend to be the same, he opened up the habits and techniques that have helped him thrive as an international correspondent.

?1)?What are your top tips for young business journalists and how can they stay ahead of the game in this competitive field?

When it comes to business and financial journalism it obviously helps to be interested in business and finance for a start. I remember from my college newspaper, The Daily Tar Heel, that the most engaging writers?back then were the guys covering sports ? because they?d followed it all their lives, knew a lot about it and were passionate. It takes time (and experience) to build up a similar degree of passion for politics, international affairs, finance or business, but when it?hits, it needs to be just as intense.

  • Know your subject matter inside out?and read about it widely ? in papers, online, magazines, journals, and books.
  • If there?s some particular field you find yourself drawn to, don?t be afraid to specialize but don?t forget the broad view as well.
  • ?Never think someone you meet is too small to care about ? the most random people end up becoming serious players.
  • Always explore the human side of finance and business ? it?s never just about stocks, currencies, bonds or derivatives.
  • Don?t be seduced by your subject. You?ll run into lots of wealthy people, but you are still a journalist and your integrity is everything.

2) What is your advice on covering a huge entity, like the European Union, and a phenomenon like the European debt crisis??

When it comes to covering the EU (27 countries, 500 million people, 20-odd languages) or the European debt crisis, scale is everything. It?s such a vast topic/story that it can?t be covered by only one or two people in a single city.

At Reuters, we?ve got bureaus in every EU member state?(sometimes more than one)?and can call on anywhere up to 30 correspondents to cover a particular story, if needs be. Brussels, where I oversee a team of?25 photo, text and TV journalists,?is the central hub of that effort and so?my job frequently involves coordinating coverage across?a dozen or more countries.

It?s about giving reporters very specific tasks, using our network wisely, pulling all the reporting together rapidly and triangulating the information to produce the hardest-hitting, most-insightful stories we can, under tight time pressure.

In Brussels, you need to have language skills, to be able to build contacts easily with diplomats and policymakers from Germany to Finland to Slovakia and have a good nose for political spin.

Larger version of 5 questions with logo3) What are some tips for effectively dealing with spokespeople, especially those who try to avoid specific questions?

The best way of dealing with spokespeople who give pat answers is to go around them. You can?t properly report Brussels/the EU by relying on spokespeople or you?ll never deliver meaningful news.?It means building contacts at much higher levels while also keeping the spokespeople on side. To successfully cover a story like the European debt crisis, you need to be on good (up to text-messaging) terms with several of the following:

  • Diplomats (up to ambassador-level)?from the major countries and as many other states as possible.
  • Members of specialist committees working to resolve?the crisis, which frequently means finance ministers or their deputies.
  • Senior policymakers involved with drafting legislative proposals.
  • Top officials in ministries back in the member states? capitals, not just officials in Brussels.
  • Spokespeople, especially those who will engage ? and most will, once you?ve built up some trust.

4) Tell us about a time when your persistent, hard work paid off.

Without being too immodest, we?ve broken quite a few big stories during the debt crisis, which has?been running for more than two years and shows few signs of letting up. The big moments tend to be summits, when all 27 EU leaders (or sometimes just the 17 from the euro zone countries) get together to hammer out an agreement. The meetings go on for two days and there can be anywhere up to 800 journalists covering them, with all the reporters in one building desperately trying to find out what the leaders upstairs are discussing or?have agreed.

Last December, the focus was on Greece and efforts to?restructure its debt. We reported that a deal had been reached with bankers to write off half Greece?s debts and we?provided figures on the agreement.?Lots of diplomats and plenty of journalists in the room came and asked how we?d got it as they were still in the dark. At a news conference at the end of the summit, one senior EU?official told a journalist to read?the Reuters story if he wanted to know what had been agreed and added: ?It?s on Reuters, so it must be true.? That was very satisfying.

?5) How do you use social media on the business beat?

Social media is becoming ever more important, although not all aspects of it. I use Twitter all day, every day but don?t use Facebook at all. Twitter I?use it as a tip service, as a means of contact-building, to keep up with the conversation even if I?m not taking part in it, and as a way of promoting the bureau?s work. I think you have to exploit social media without getting wrapped up in it, which means using the tools at your disposal but not becoming a slave to them.

LinkedIn is also very valuable if used in the right way ? to rapidly reach out to someone who could be a useful contact on a story without having to go through a press or media department at that person?s company. The danger for journalists is trusting these platforms too much.

There?s lots of nonsense/misinformation on Twitter, for example, and you have to make sure your guard is always up. The president of the European Council, which represents EU leaders, sometimes breaks news on Twitter, but even then it?s necessary to double check as his staff (who are responsible for updating his Twitter feed) can make mistakes.

Want to fly next to your child? Prepare to pay

Summer travel will become more costly this year now that airlines are charging more for aisle and window seats, in some cases $25 each way. NBC's Tom Costello reports.

By Elaine Porterfield , msnbc.com contributor

It?s not just enough to buy your airplane ticket anymore: Increasingly, along with checking baggage, airlines want you to pay extra to ensure a seat next to your travel companions, including your spouse or child.

That?s sure to lead to unhappiness during the coming busy summer travel season, with passengers already toting their own suitcases and carrying their own food to avoid paying additional fees. In many cases, it may cost as much as $25 ? each way ??to ensure you and your companion sit together. And last month, United Airlines ended its policy of allowing families traveling with small children to board early, USA Today reports.?

Families in coach who have small children are no longer being offered early boarding. NBC's Brian Williams reports.

It?s tough news for many summer travelers. Airlines have?successfully raised airfares?three times this year.?Business travelers are already facing fares that will likely rise this year an average of four percent in North America, according to the Egencia's 2012 Global Corporate Travel Forecast. Egencia is an Expedia, Inc. company.

Regarding the seat reservation fees, it works like this: Airlines are reserving a growing number of window and aisle seats for passengers willing to pay extra for them,?the Associated Press reports. While airlines say it's a move to?boost revenue, the policy is making it harder for friends and family members who don't pay this fee to sit next to each other. At the peak of the summer travel season, it might be nearly impossible, the AP reports.

Since last summer, American, Delta Air Lines, Frontier Airlines and United Airlines have increased the percentage of coach seats requiring some kind of extra fee. Allegiant Air and Spirit Airlines charge extra for any advanced seat assignment, according to the AP.

?I think it?s going to fall flat on its face,? predicted travel psychologist Michael Brein, PhD, of Bainbridge Island, Wash. ?It?s pushing the envelope a little far for travelers. People have had it up to here with fees, and this one sounds not so well thought out to me.?

George Hobica, founder and president of the Internet travel site Airfarewatchdog, said he thinks the fees are reasonable. ?When you think about it, when you go to a theater, a Broadway play, you always pay extra for better seats. They?re doing the same thing.?

Airlines are having a tough time, Hobica points out:? ?Two of our remaining airlines lost money last quarter, and the industry as a whole had a 1.5 percent profit margin. I?m all about low airfares ? it?s been my stock in trade for almost 20 years. But the traveling public has had it good at expense of the airlines? People need to be honest and should buck up and say if they want these low fares, then the people who want special service should pay (extra) for it.?

One airline bucking the trend is the Seattle-based Alaska.

?We do not charge for priority seating, or seating together at Alaska Airlines,? said spokeswoman Marianne Lindsey. ?We do hold some seats out for last-minute booking by our elite member frequent fliers and passengers with disabilities, but in general you should be able to find seats together for your family.?

Now and again, that can be a challenge, Lindsey said.

?In some instances, however, with full flights, families may not be seated together,? she said. ?In this instance, we do all that we can to accommodate families requesting seating together, including asking if there are other travelers that would be willing to change their seats for the family. If all four cannot be seated together we try to at least get one parent with each child. Oftentimes, once families are onboard, other travelers offer to move to accommodate the family, and our flight attendants help facilitate this.?

Would you pay extra to guarantee a seat next to your traveling companion? Tell us about it on Facebook.

New airline charges could be costly for families hoping to sit together on flights. WMAQ's Christian Farr reports.

Rich-poor divide bogs down UN climate talks

Developing nations say the industrialized world - responsible for most of the emissions historically - should bear the brunt of the emissions cuts while developed nations want to make sure that fast-growing economies like China and India don't get off too easy.

U.N.?climate?talks ran into gridlock Thursday as a widening rift between rich and poor countries risked undoing some advances made last year in the decades-long effort to control carbon emissions that scientists say are overheating the planet.

As so often in the slow-moving negotiations, the session in Bonn bogged down with disputes over technicalities. But at the heart of the discord was the larger issue of how to divide the burden of emissions cuts between developed and developing nations. Developing nations say the industrialized world - responsible for most of the emissions historically - should bear the brunt of the emissions cuts while developed nations want to make sure that fast-growing economies like China and India don't get off too easy. China is now the world's top polluter.

"There is a total stalemate," said Artur Runge-Metzger, the chief negotiator for the European Union.

The negotiations in Bonn were meant to build on a deal struck in December in Durban, South Africa, to create a new global?climate?pact by 2015 that would make both rich and poor nations rein in emissions caused by the burning of oil and other fossil fuels. But on the next-to-last day of two weeks of talks there was little sign of progress, as different interpretations emerged on what, exactly, was agreed upon last year.

"There is distrust and there is frustration in the atmosphere," Seyni Nafo, spokesman for a group of African countries, told The Associated Press.

The European Union claims China and other developing countries are backsliding on commitments made in Durban to bring the discussion on emissions cuts from both rich and poor nations into one forum, instead of the current structure, which has two parallel negotiation tracks. Developing countries - backed by?climateactivists - accuse the U.S., EU and other industrialized nations of trying to evade commitments made in previous negotiations and shift responsibilities for tackling?climate?change to the developing world.

"Developed countries like the U.S., Japan, Canada and Russia ... have consistently blocked references to the existing legal principles, while continuing to ignore the fact that their meager emission cut targets expose the world's most vulnerable people to?climate?change's devastating effects," said Mohamed Adow, a senior?climatechange adviser at Christian Aid.

Meanwhile, emissions are going up, not down.

The Paris-based International Energy Agency said Thursday that carbon emissions from fossil fuels reached a record high of 31.6 gigatons in 2011, a 3.2 percent increase from the year before.

Despite improving on its energy efficiency, China accounted for the biggest contribution to the global increase, with emissions growing by 720 million tons, or 9.3 percent, the IEA said.

U.S. emissions fell by 1.7 percent, "primarily due to ongoing switching from coal to natural gas in power generation and an exceptionally mild winter," the agency said, while Japan's emissions rose 2.4 percent as it increased the use of fossil fuels in the wake of the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

The IEA data also showed that India moved ahead of Russia to become the fourth largest CO2 emitter, behind China, the U.S. and the EU.

Since their launch in the early 1990s, the?U.N. talks have had little success reducing emissions of the heat-trapping gases that a large majority of?climate?scientists say are warming the Earth, with potentially devastating consequences for poor countries ill-prepared to deal rising sea levels, floods, droughts and other effects of a changing?climate.

Actions taken and pledged so far fall well short of what the?U.N. experts say is needed to achieve the goal of preventing global temperatures from rising more than 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.2 degrees Celsius) above current levels by the end of this century.

The only existing binding treaty, the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, was shunned by the U.S. because it doesn't impose any emissions targets on China, thus leaving out the two biggest carbon emitters on the globe. It was set to expire this year but countries agreed in Durban to extend it, though they haven't agreed on how long. Canada, Japan and Russia have refused to make any new commitments under Kyoto, meaning it only covers about 15 percent of global emissions.

Meet Lakshmi Moorthy, New Product Introduction ... - GE Careers Blog

Lakshmi Moorthy is New Product Introduction Leader ? GE Capital, EMEA, London. In this interview she shares her experience working for GE.

What is your current role?

I am currently the New Product Introduction (NPI) leader for GE Capital EMEA. I work with our platforms across EMEA to identify new products opportunities and help bring them to market, including conducting a detailed cross functional due diligence for each product.

How did you start your working life?

I started working at HSBC in India, where I held a variety of sales and marketing roles over the 4 years I was there. I then moved to Europe and did my MBA, and joined GE on the Experienced Commercial Leadership Programme (ECLP), a fast track programme for commercial talent. I then moved to GE Capital in Europe, and held a series of marketing, business development and commercial roles in my 8 years here.

What has been the journey to that role in terms of other career milestones?

A key career milestone has been joining the ECLP programme in its very first year (as one the pioneers or the guinea pigs ? whatever you prefer to call it!) ? it turned out to be a fantastic experience in terms of the diverse, global assignments I got to do across various businesses. The other key milestone in my journey has been moving to my current role after 6 years in consumer lending ? this role spans both commercial and consumer lending products, and allowed me to leverage my past experiences while building new skills.

When did you decide you wanted to take this career route?

The move to working in financial services was taken very early on in life ? I have an undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering, but one look at a real chemical plant in my final year internship convinced me it wasn?t for me! So I decided to switch to marketing financial services instead and later did my MBA to help build the skills I need.

What do you most enjoy about your job?

The diverse products/assignments I get to work on, and the fabulous people I work with at GE ? I truly do learn something new every day in our ever changing world in financial services?.even though the seas have been choppy for financial services lately!

Have you had an important mentor along the way?

A couple of early managers (at HSBC and at GE) have been key mentors, and I have gone back to them for advice at various points in my career. I have been fortunate to also receive more ?informal? mentoring and career advice from senior GE leaders I have worked with, who have given me valuable guidance at critical junctures in my career. I am also now part of a formal mentoring programme at GE for senior women in commercial roles, and am really excited about how that will help me grow even further.

How has GE helped you progress in your career?

GE is a fantastic company when it comes to career growth and development ? right from the initial rotational programme (ECLP) I joined to the in-depth annual appraisal to some truly fabulous leadership development programmes, GE encourages you to keep growing continually.

I just spent 2 weeks at GE?s dedicated leadership facility in New York on one of GE?s premier executive development courses ? where I was invited to pause and reflect on how to take my career even further. I spent 2 weeks with participants from various GE businesses across the globe, and got career advice and coaching from some very senior GE leaders who helped me gain some insights into my leadership style. Few companies dedicate that level of time and resources to growing their people, and I am fortunate to work for one of them.

What tips and advice would you give to young women starting out on their career today?

Believe in yourself and come take your rightful place at the table! Find a job/company that you truly enjoy working in, build a network of good mentors/coaches who will give you candid advice, and then seek diverse experiences/roles to keep learning.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? time?

Hopefully heading Marketing for one of GE Capital?s platforms or key business lines.

In your words, why do you think GE has been named one of the Times Top 50 employers for women?

As a working mum with two young children, GE allows me to balance my career aspirations with my personal goals, and fulfil each role fully. GE?s flexible work practises, focus on results and accountability (rather than merely ?clocking the hours?) and fantastic team culture have allowed me to balance work with the occasional needs (crises!) of a young family. And having some very senior women in GE as role models helped ? it showed me how to grow my career without sacrificing my personal goals.
