BOOM! Square Just Doubled Its Retail Distribution - Business Insider

Square's credit-card reader, which turns any iPhone or iPad into a cash register, is now available in 20,000 stores in the US?doubling its previous retail reach.

The fact that you can pick up a Square card reader at Walgreen's, FedEx Office, and Staples?in addition to the Apple Store, Best Buy, RadioShack, UPS, and Wal-Mart, which already carried it?is looking like a key competitive advantage.

While Square's competitors, notably PayPal and Verifone, have loudly declared their intention to compete in the market for devices that let you swipe credit cards on mobile devices, they haven't done as much as Square to make their card readers available.

PayPal Here is nowhere?literally, it still hasn't launched. A PayPal spokesperson didn't respond to an email asking about PayPal's (eventual) retail-distribution plans, if any.

Verifone's Sail, which got caught cribbing its legalese from Square's user agreement, hasn't copied Square's retail-distribution strategy. When sellers sign up for the app, they'll get the card reader delivered by mail in three to five business days, according to a spokeswoman for Verifone.

Intuit, similarly, mails out its GoPayment card readers.

Even if Square's competitors switch gears and start distributing readers in stores, they may find it tough to displace Square without offering expensive incentives to retail partners, who offer limited shelf space to specialized gear like credit-card readers.

Square COO Keith Rabois dissed PayPal Here and other competitors in a recent interview with GigaOm for making announcements without much substance. But on this, he's got a point: You can actually find Square at a store near you.?

Movie Review: 'Snow White and the Huntsman' - Johns Creek, GA ...

Kristen Stewart is Snow White, a warrior princess who launches a battle to reclaim her kingdom from Queen Ravenna (Charlize Theron) in "Snow White and the Huntsman."

As in the fairy tale, the queen locks Snow White in a tower prison while plunging the realm into chaos after the computer-generated mirror tells her she is no longer the fairest of them all. The queen then sends out studly huntsman Eric (Chris Hemsworth) to capture Snow White ... But he soon declines his mission, opting to protect the princess ? and face the queen's wrath.

The film is not altogether bad. Its visual fireworks help keep the film afloat, even if Snow White (Stewart) can't get out of "Twilight" mode.

A modern-day twist on this 200-year-old fairy tale, the movie is more like "The Lord of the Rings" meets the Brothers Grimm. And while the battle scenes are fitting, the performances prevent the story from having the resonance of either movie or fable.

The film includes nods to the fairy tale ? there are dwarfs (eight instead of seven, for some reason), and they have many of the film's most humorous scenes. But those are too few and far between. The Flick-O-Meter gives "Snow White and the Huntsman" three out of five.

I do like the message that women don't need to be the damsels in distress, that they can handle things on their own.

But, you know what? Maybe someone should have asked that mirror, "Who are the fairest screenwriters of them all?'' ? and hunted them down. That's my two cents.
