Police think Canada body parts suspect fled abroad

(AP Photo/City of Montreal Police Service)

(AP) ? A Canadian porn actor suspected of mailing body parts to?the headquarters of two major political parties after making a video of the killing might have fled to France, police said Thursday.

A Montreal police official said they have information that Luka Rocco Magnotta might have left Canada for France but said his current whereabouts are not known. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because she was not authorized to talk about the case publicly, gave no other details.

Montreal Police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere earlier said authorities believe Magnotta fled North America based on evidence they found at his apartment, and based on a blog Magnotta once wrote about how to disappear.

Magnotta, 29, has been added to Interpol's "wanted persons" list.

"We believe he may be in a foreign country," Lafreniere told The Associated Press. "He left a letter on a website mentioning how to disappear for good, and secondly, our investigation brought us some details that might let us think that he could be away from the country."

Lafreniere also said police have been trying to take down an online video that they believe shows Magnotta murdering a man he dated.

The video shows a man stabbing another man with an ice pick while the victim lies naked and tied up. The first man later reveals he has slashed the other man's throat. He also dismembers the corpse and performs sexual acts with it.

Lafreniere said they were able to take down the video Wednesday night but that it keeps reappearing online.

"It's horrible. I can't believe people take advantage of watching this," he said.

Lafreniere said police believe the victim is a man reported missing several days ago and that the man's family lives overseas. He said police were having trouble contacting the family.

The case began Tuesday when police found a man's torso in a suitcase behind Magnotta's apartment building and a severed foot was found in a package mailed to the Conservative Party headquarters in Ottawa. A hand was found in a separate package at a postal facility, addressed to the Liberal Party of Canada.

Other body parts remain missing, and Lafreniere said police are investigating the possibility that they also may have been put in the mail.

Criminal profiler Pat Brown said the suspect clearly loves attention.

"He's not political, psychopaths rarely are, so he didn't send those parts for political reasons but to get a splash in the media. He wants to go in history as being the creepiest guy out there," Brown said.

Police said Magnotta is also known by the names Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov. They described him as white and 5 feet 8 inches tall (1.78 meters) with blue eyes and black hair. A police official said he was a porn actor.

His internet presence indicates he is a bisexual porn actor and model with a myriad of aliases.

Magnotta changed his name from Eric Clinton Kirkman in 2006, and online posts suggest he had a longtime fascination with identity change and escape.

In a post on the Digital Journal website dated 2009 that police confirmed, a six-step article under Magnotta's name describes how to disappear.

"When making the decision to disappear, it is very important to understand that this is not a process that can be successfully accomplished overnight," it reads. "For best results under normal circumstances, a minimum of four months is really necessary to successfully carry out the heroic actions necessary to leave your old life behind.

"This is certainly not an undertaking to be entered into lightly?? be completely sure of yourself before you commit to this."

A Montana lawyer said he alerted authorities after seeing the video the murder on a gore website days before it became part of the investigation, but he was only taken seriously after the murder was reported. The lawyer, Roger Renville, said he saw the video on Saturday morning and by late Saturday afternoon had called law enforcement, including local law enforcement, FBI, Toronto police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

"The last one was Toronto police department and nobody would take the report seriously," he said. "Late Tuesday I called the Mounties, and given what was in the news that day they took it very seriously and when I told them the name of the suspect they said 'we're looking for this guy' and they took it very seriously and took all my information."

Magnotta, born in the Toronto area, was renting an apartment in a working-class Montreal neighborhood. Police in masks combed through the blood-streaked apartment Wednesday.

Mike Gauthier, who has lived in the building for three years, said Magnotta's apartment was emptied before he apparently vanished in recent days. There were no clothes and no books inside, he said.

Few tenants said they knew Magnotta, who had only lived in the building for around four months. They described him as an effeminate man who was quiet and aloof but pleasant at times.

An online video shows a man who looks like Magnotta committing violent acts against kittens. The video contains at least one photo made available by Montreal police Wednesday that identified the man as Magnotta.

For nearly two years, animal-rights activists have been looking for a man who tortured and killed cats and posted videos of it online.

Police discovered the severed foot Tuesday after Jenni Bryne, a top political adviser to Prime Minister Stephen Harper, opened a bloodstained box at Conservative party headquarters.

When Bryne opened the box, a foul odor overcame the office.

"It was such a horrible odor. I'm sure many of us will not forget it," Conservative Party spokesman Fred DeLorey said.

Police said the package was addressed to the Conservative Party of Canada and not to a specific person.

Cancer survivors' concert will celebrate life | cancer, choir, e - News ...

The Celebration of Life Singers believe music has the power to heal.

The singers, who have each had cancer or cared for someone who did, have experienced that power themselves.

If you go

What: "A Celebration of Life" concert, featuring The Yuukari Chorus, cello player Ray Irwin, and pianist and vocalist Kathy Harris.

When: 7 p.m. Saturday, June 9.

Where: St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 12432 Ninth St., Garden Grove.

Cost: Free.

Information:cols-oc.org

T.J. England of Huntington Beach joined in 2000, eight years after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Now, she's the Celebration of Life Singers vice president.

"Music touched me in a way the spoken word didn't," England said.

The Celebration of Life Singers have performed at the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, the Relay for Life, the Crystal Cathedral, City of Hope, UCI Medical Center, Hope University Auditorium in Fullerton, and the Ronald McDonald House Children's Christmas Party.

The group, along with Japanese choir The Yuukari Chorus, cello player Ray Irwin, and pianist and vocalist Kathy Harris, will give a free concert, "A Celebration of Life,'' at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 9 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, 12432 Ninth St., in Garden Grove.

England, a nurse, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. Two years later, after treatments, she joined the Christ First Presbyterian Church choir in Huntington Beach. She was introduced to the Celebration of Life Singers through a neighbor and fellow singer, Vy Rieck, who died in August 2002.

England has been on both sides of the cancer battle, as a survivor and as a supporter when her husband, Jerry, fought prostate cancer in 2006.

"For me, it was tougher being his support than having cancer," she said. "Cancer touches everyone in the person's environment. It's like a pebble in a stream."

Donna Killingbeck of Santa Ana joined the choir a few years after her mother, multiple myeloma survivor Mary Jane Martinez of Garden Grove.

Killingbeck said the other singers are the reason she stays with the group. She's hoping more caregivers and survivors will join.

"They love to sing and it shows," she said.

The 18 singers support each other, share their hopes and sorrows, look out for each other, and are always looking for new members.

They come from multicultural backgrounds and from cities around Orange County, including Huntington Beach, Mission Viejo, Cypress, Santa Ana, Buena Park and Long Beach.

Some couldn't read music before they joined. That diversity is one factor that appeals to choir president and two-time cancer survivor Helga Hoffmann of Mission Viejo.

"We are not professionals... We're singing to have a good time together," Hoffmann said.

Hoffmann was diagnosed with cancer for the second time last year, 18 years after her first fight with cancer. She's since been given a clean bill of health.

The choir's Tuesday night rehearsals at St. Olaf's Lutheran Church are light-hearted and fun. Singers arrive around 7 p.m. and spend a few minutes visiting before England or Hoffmann make announcements about choir business. Singers will later call to check on anyone who misses a rehearsal.

"These people have dealt with mortality and are living each day with as much gusto as they can," England said.

The choir was formed in 1997 by director Joann Quak and oncology nurse Marianne Minor. Steve Han took over as director in the early 2000s.

After a few minutes of scales and other warm-up exercises they delve into the music. During the rehearsals, they let their emotions out. It's common for a singer or two to tear up during particularly touching songs.

For Hoffmann, patriotic pieces pull her heartstrings. The performers keep it together during the concerts, Hoffmann said.

"You'll see the joy we feel in some of these songs, and the emotion," England said.

The choir anthem is, "Keep the Flame Alive." During some concerts, audience members are given candles as the choir sings, "There will always be hope for all who walk this way, dreams to dream and memories."

Each lit candle shows a person whose life has been affected by cancer.

"It's amazing," England said. "It really touches your soul when you look out there. That song brings a lot of us to tears, especially when you remember the members we've said goodbye to."

It's tough, sometimes, to be faced with reminders of those who have died over the years. But choir members are hopeful.

"It helps you overcome your own sense of mortality," England said. "For the moment, you're free of pain, fear, and worries. You're just in the moment with the music and the people around you."

Pet Food for Emergencies | This and That Online Blog

In a long-term emergency we want our entire family to thrive, and that includes our beloved pets. Dogs and cats will have vital roles to play during a long-term emergency and we want them on their A-game!

Cats are very skilled at trapping and will keep the rodents away from your retreat and?your food supply, thus keeping diseases at bay. Dogs on the other hand, are ideal to have on a retreat because they will be a good alert system, make excellent hunting companions, protect the family and help to herd livestock. Larger breeds could even help?pull small wagons?to help even more around the homestead.

To keep these animals healthy, keep their needs in mind when making your emergency preparations. Due to the cost of pet food, storing dry food is preferred over storing the wet food. When storing dry goods for dogs and cats, look for dry food that does not have a lot of oils in them; as the oils can make the food go rancid more quickly.

Stockpiled pet food will only last for so long. ?What?s a pet owner to do when the kibble supply runs dry?

Making your own pet food is a more financially reasonable option for some. The cost is actually comparable to the price of kibble, and the nutrition content of homemade pet food is far higher.

Creating pet food is not so much about having the recipe to do so ? it?s about knowing the proper ratios for optimum nutrition for your pet. The following information is geared towards healthy adult pets without special dietary needs.

A Feast for Felines

Cats have different nutritional requirements than dogs. ?When a cat in the wild catches a mouse or a bird, they generally eat it, bones, organs and all. They receive a small amount of vegetables and grains, based on the stomach contents of their prey.

Cats require more protein than dogs, and do not digest corn or grains well.? Meat is the number one element of homemade cat food. Bones are also a very important addition to the feline diet ? this is how your cat gets enough calcium. Liver is an excellent addition to your homemade cat food but should not make up more than 10% of their intake. Much of the waste that you would throw out when preparing a whole chicken for your family would be a welcome addition to the cat food dish.

Use this ratio to create your own cat food, based on the items you have on hand.

Meat:? 3 parts

Organs: 1 part

Grain: 1 part

Veggies: ? part

Some cat approved vegetables include:?lightly steamed broccoli, carrots, zucchini, caulifower, or any other vegetables that your cat happens to enjoy. Some cats even like the taste of fruit such as melon, mango or apple, and if your cat enjoys these healthy treats it is fine to supplement their diet this way.

The meat in this mixture can either be lightly cooked or raw. I include the skin in the cat food, as it gives them some much needed fat. The grain and veggies should be cooked. If you have a meat grinder, you can put the entire concoction through the grinder before feeding it to your cat.

To supplement the diet, you will need to add some olive or flax oil and some bone meal (either commercial or grind your own in the meat grinder).

I use broth to cook the grains that I include in my homemade cat food.

The meat can be any kind of meat. Canned fish, like sardines, are especially good for cats because of the high calcium levels. However, the cat should not subsist only on fish.

You can find some homemade cat food recipes HERE.

Doggie Dinner Delights

The canine digestive system is a little less delicate than the system of cats. The ratio is much simpler:

1 part meat

1 part grain

1 part veggies

Broccoli, spinach, celery, carrots, peas, and green beans are favorite veggies among canines. Keep in mind that some vegetables are more difficult to digest than others. Dogs may have a harder time digesting broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Avocados, tomatoes, and wild mushrooms should be avoided as they are potentially harmful.

I cook my dog food all together on the stove top (we refer to it as ?dog stew?. I make a broth from leftover chicken carcasses, etc, and use it for the base. I use grains from my stockpile, like rice and oats, and generally use canned vegetables. Peas and carrots are a special favorite of the pooches in our house.

I include the skin when cooking the meat for the dogs as well. As with cats, the addition of some bone meal is very important. Since bones are something that would generally be thrown out, I appreciate finding a use for them in the name of less waste. Don?t forget the addition of a healthy fat, like whole eggs or olive oil!

It?s All About the Ratios

Now that you know the basic ratios for good nutrition for your pets, you can use foods that you have in your stockpile/freezer to feed your pets. You may find that your grocery bills drop as you find ways to use less expensive cuts of meat and last day of sale items to feed your pets!

When making your homemade pet food, it?s an excellent time to add supplements like vitamin drops, brewer?s yeast and garlic to keep your pets healthy and parasite-free.

Once you?ve started feeding your pets these homemade nutritious foods, you will notice a lovely glowing coat and far more energy. The nutrition level and lack of preservatives will benefit their health while benefitting your wallet!

Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough Enter Safe Haven

After zooming to fame with TV's Las Vegas and the Transformers series (with the odd detour into Katherine Heigl rom-com territory), Josh Duhamel is coming full circle, in a way: The onetime All My Children soap star set to step into the next Nicholas Sparks romantic weepie, Safe Haven, opposite Footloose/Rock of Ages starlet Julianne Hough.

The Sparks flick looks to be one-time would-be dentist Duhamel's first straight romantic film role yet that doesn't overlap into romantic comedy (When in Rome, Life as We Know It) or ensemble (The Romantics, New Year's Eve). For Hough, Safe Haven will mark her first work in a non-performance-based role (as in Footloose, Burlesque, and Rock of Ages) aside from her upcoming turn in Diablo Cody's directorial debut.

I say it's about time Duhamel embrace his leading man status in the kind of movie that has more explosive sighs then explosions. Unleash that inner Leo du Pres, you gorgeous (and, per Sparks tradition) tortured man! Lasse Hallstrom is set to direct, with filming to begin in June for a pre-Valentine's Week 2013 release. Soak up the synopsis and ponder: just how Sparksian will Safe Haven be?

Safe Haven is an affirming and suspenseful story about a young woman?s struggle to find love again after she arrives in a small North Carolina town. Her reluctance to join the tight-knit community raises questions about her past. Slowly, she begins putting down roots, and gains the courage to start a relationship with Alex, a widowed store owner with two young children. But dark secrets intrude on her new life with such terror that she is forced to rediscover the meaning of sacrifice and rely on the power of love in this deeply moving romantic thriller.
