Obama hones populist message to push economic agenda (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? President Obama's aides have persistently tried to paint Republicans as the party of the rich, with mixed results.

Now, the White House sees signs the message is resonating and Obama will try this week to seize on the momentum to gain victories on two priorities: renewing a popular tax cut and getting Senate approval for a new Wall Street regulator.

Since September, Obama has traveled the country to try to sell a $447 billion jobs package he argues is vital to reviving the lackluster economy and helping middle-class families.

So far, he has little to show for those efforts, leaving him vulnerable in the 2012 presidential campaign to Republican attacks over his economic stewardship amid stubbornly high U.S. unemployment and an anemic recovery.

But the White House is increasingly optimistic about the prospects for one part of the jobs plan: an extension of a temporary payroll tax cut that was first passed a year ago.

Obama's advisers see a split that has emerged among Republicans over the payroll tax cut as evidence they have gained an advantage on that issue.

"Our hand is very strong on this," one senior administration official said, adding that Republicans would demonstrate "historically unprecedented hypocrisy" if they try to insist they are the party of tax cuts while opposing the renewal of the payroll tax cut.

Obama's aides also believe they can gain traction for the effort to confirm Richard Cordray, who has a history of taking a tough stance toward banks, as head of the watchdog agency charged with protecting consumers from financial fraud.

Obama will try to give a boost to both priorities and hone his populist campaign message on Tuesday by channeling former U.S. President Teddy Roosevelt during a trip to Osawatomie, Kansas.

More than a 100 years ago, Roosevelt delivered a speech in Osawatomie in which he railed against big corporations and the privileged while arguing for "fair play" for ordinary Americans. Obama will echo those themes, aides said.

"The kinds of things of arguments that (Obama) will be making in Kansas ... dovetail very nicely with the importance of leveling the playing field and ensuring that the middle-class get a fair shot in a difficult economy," White House deputy press secretary Josh Earnest told reporters.

'THE BIG BATTLE'

Speaking on the NBC program "Meet the Press," longtime Obama adviser David Axelrod described the payroll tax cut extension as "the big battle" and "the big question we have to solve right now."

Emphasizing themes Obama is likely to use to push for confirmation of Cordray, Axelrod also hammered Republicans on financial regulation.

"They think if we roll back the rules on Wall Street and let Wall Street write its own rules that that will somehow accelerate the economy and profit everyday Americans," he said.

Many rank-and-file Republicans are wary of extending the holiday on payroll taxes, which provides the revenue stream for a government trust fund for the Social Security retirement program. Opponents of the tax cut - who include some Democrats - argue that continuing the tax cut would weaken the Social Security trust fund.

However, Republican leaders, including House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, have emphasized in recent days that they are willing to work with Obama to extend the cut.

Boehner spokesman Brendan Buck said the notion that Obama was managing to pressure Republicans over the tax cut was based on a "false premise" that the party is refusing to work with president on the issue.

"We offered 77 days ago to sit down and work out the details with him," Buck said. "If he wants to sit down and get it done, we think we probably can."

Without congressional action by the end of the year, the payroll tax would revert to 6.2 percent from the current rate of 4.2 percent.

Obama's Democrats are emphasizing a Senate vote last week in which Republicans refused to go along with their push to extend and expand the payroll tax cut and pay for it with higher taxes on millionaires.

Republicans have resisted confirmation of Cordray, contending that the legislation that created the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau he would head up needs to be changed to rein in the regulatory agency and make it more accountable.

A Senate vote on Cordray's nomination is tentatively scheduled for Thursday. White House officials said Obama is planning a major media blitz this week to try to pressure Republicans to approve Cordray.

With the Occupy Wall Street movement in the spotlight, Obama's efforts could play well with Democratic activists who at times have been frustrated with his reluctance to fully embrace anti-Wall Street sentiment.

Although he has referred to bankers as "fat cats," Obama has at times sought to modulate his rhetoric toward the financial industry because of wariness about upsetting markets and fear of being cast as anti-business by Republicans.

Instant nanodots grow on silicon to form sensing array

ScienceDaily (Dec. 2, 2011) ? Scientists have shown that it is now possible to simultaneously create highly reproductive three-dimensional silicon oxide nanodots on micrometric scale silicon films in only a few seconds. Xavier Landreau and his colleagues at the University of Limoges, France, demonstrated in their paper to be published in EPJD? that they were able to create a square array of such nanodots, using regularly spaced nanoindents on the deposition layer, that could ultimately find applications as biosensors for genomics or bio-diagnostics.

They used a process called atmospheric pressure plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition. This approach is a much faster alternative to methods such as nanoscale lithography, which only permits the deposition of one nanodot at a time. It also improves upon other silicon oxide growth processes that do not make it possible to precisely order the nanodots into an array. In addition, it can be carried out at atmospheric pressure, which decreases its costs compared to low-pressure deposition processes. One of the authors' goals was to understand the self-organization mechanisms leading to a preferential deposition of the nanodots in the indents.

By varying the indents' interspacing, they made it comparable to the average distance travelled by the silicon oxide particles of the deposited material. Thus, by adapting both the indents' spacing and the silicon substrate temperature, they observed optimum self-ordering inside the indents using atomic force microscopy. The next step in their research will be to investigate how such nanoarrays could be used as nanosensors. They plan to develop similar square arrays on metallic substrates in order to better control the driving forces that produce the highly ordered self-organisation of nanodots. Further research will be needed to give sensing ability to individual nanodots by associating them with probe molecules designed to recognise target molecules to be detected.

US teen wins inaugural women's World Cup ski jump

(AP) ? American teenager Sarah Hendrickson won the first women's World Cup ski jump on the same Lillehammer hill used by the men in the 1994 Winter Olympics.

The 17-year-old Hendrickson jumped 95? meters Saturday, pushing French opponent Coline Mattel to second place.

Hendrickson, of Park City, Utah, scored 277 points, Mettel 247.7, and Melanie Faisst of Germany 245.5 for third.

"I held it together and I'm very happy," a smiling Hendrickson said after the race.

The competition was delayed by more than an hour because of the snowy and windy weather conditions, but Hendrickson said she wasn't affected by the extra wait.

"You just have to jump like you do always," she said. "You can't change anything ? stay strong and keep relaxed and hopefully it will come together."

World champion Daniela Iraschko of Austria was fourth.

Nearly 50 women from 15 countries took part, although American Lindsey Van ? who became the sport's first female world champion in 2009 ? missed the inaugural World Cup event because of a hip injury.

Beginning with the women's second-tier Continental Cup began seven years ago, the competition Saturday was another milestone in a long battle to get women's ski jumping recognized as an elite sport.

The sport was included on the Olympic program for the 2014 Sochi Games after the International Olympic Committee twice rejected it for the 2010 Vancouver program, arguing that it lacked elite competition.

In the men's event, Austria's Andreas Kofler won after setting a hill record with a leap of 105 meters in the first round. He jumped 98 meters in the second round, earning a total score of 279.3 points.

Germany's Richard Freitag was second with 273.3 points and Poland's Kamil Stoch came third.

Tourists stroll down the Giza pyramids plateau, even though the Great Pyramid was closed Friday.

By Charlene Gubash, NBC News Producer

CAIRO ? Egypt?s legendary pyramids are always a draw for tourists from all over the world ? but they had a particular lure for New Age spiritualists Friday who wanted to meditate inside the country?s greatest pyramid on the auspicious date of 11-11-11.

But no dice; pyramids closed Friday.

No visitors were allowed to enter the stone portal of the Great Pyramid of Giza, climb the Grand Gallery, marvel at the soaring stone ceiling above, and awe at the king?s 4,500-year-old burial chamber and empty sarcophagus.?

Antiquities officials said they were forced to close the pyramid because of a Facebook campaign and media blitz against tourists who wanted to commemorate the day by meditating inside the king?s chamber.?

Post-revolutionary Egypt is rife with conspiracy theories with an anti-Semitic edge.? Rumor-mongering writers warned that the foreign tourists who wanted to engage in strange rituals commemorating 11-11-11 were Masonic worshippers and Jews.?

The title of an anti-meditation website said it all: ?Together, Reject the Masonic and Jewish Celebration of 11-11-11 in the Pyramid.?

One of the more bizarre and widely held opinions was that 1,200 Jewish worshippers would mark the day by climbing the pyramid and installing a Star of David on its apex.?? Authorities bowed to public pressure and took the unprecedented step of closing the Great Pyramid in order to discourage angry protests against the spiritual pilgrims.?

Amidst tight security, the rest of Giza?s wonders, two smaller pyramids and the Sphinx, were still open to tourists.? Small groups of Westerners still meandered around the plateau despite the closure of the Great Pyramid ? many seeking spiritual renewal.

?Energetic significance of the date?
Carmel Glenane, an author and spiritual teacher, brought 10 students with her to make up a group of eleven.? They believe 11-11-11, or three times two, is the number of lovers and balance.?

Glenane flew in from Australia to receive the energy of the pyramids.? She says she wasn?t disappointed at being denied entry to the biggest of them.?

?We are not here for a single experience. We are here to have a group experience. We came here because it is 11-11-11, because of the energetic significance of the date.? It is the balance of masculine and feminine being harmonized in the heart?s center,? said Glenane. ?To focus on one aspect is missing the whole point. It is a journey to the heart? It?s opening up to the new Egypt, the new heart of Egypt.???

A group of 11 spiritual tourists from Australia who came to visit Egypt's pyramids for 11-11-11.

Spiritual tourism to Egypt?s antiquities is a niche sector that has existed for decades, with New Age adherents once paying hundreds of dollars to spend the night in the King?s Chamber. That privilege was curtailed long ago, but believers still come.

Leela Cosgrove, an Australian marketing consultant, comes to the site for more than an energy boost; she said she has doubled her income by consulting for businesses that sell spiritual goods and services, in addition to her to her normal marketing jobs. ?It?s been very good for business. Since bringing in the spiritual side, I have gone from making 250,000 to 500,000 Australian dollars ($186,000 to $373,000).??

One of her clients, martial arts school owner, Adriana Lazos, said she came to the pyramids on 11-11-11 to ?get the energies? and bring them back to Australia.

Skeptical residents
Some residents, hawking fake Pharaonic statues in front of the Sphinx, were skeptical.

?They closed the Pyramid because 15,000 people were supposed to come here today to worship inside,? said Mohamed Ali. ?They still came, but in small groups.? All of them that are wearing white are Jewish,? he added, gesturing darkly toward three tourists clad in white cotton slacks and shirts.

A souvenir vendor is seen near the Sphinx at the Giza Pyramids in Cairo, Egypt on Friday. Egypt's antiquities authority closed the largest of the Giza pyramids Friday following rumors that groups would try to hold spiritual ceremonies on the site at 11:11 on Nov. 11, 2011.

One of them was a Brazilian tour guide and spiritual leader who would only give her nickname, Antarielle. She said she has conducted 18 Germany-to-Egypt tours over the years.? ?This is a special date.? It?s a special place and this is the place to be.??

But, she said her visit was marred by what she called ?aggressive behavior.?

?We wanted to sit and meditate [outside the Great Pyramid] but they told us to go off.? There are thousands of people here for this purpose.? They have been told they shouldn?t allow anyone in white to sit anywhere because they will destroy the dignity of Islam.? But we managed to meditate in right front of the pyramid anyway,? Antarielle noted proudly.??

I asked what religion they were.? ?I am a spiritualist,? said Antarielle. ?I am a Christian,? said her friend. ?Nudist,? joked a third.?

The tour guide reasoned that Egypt should be more welcoming to spiritual pilgrims, especially since tourism, Egypt?s main foreign currency resource, has plummeted since the revolution that ousted Hosni Mubarak. She said her 12-day tour costs $3,412 and includes hotels, food and travel within the country ? so she said it adds a lot to the local economy.??
?
However, when I returned to the vendor, Ali, with the information that the group wasn?t Jewish, he just shook his head.? ?If they came here for meditation, they are Jews.? We don?t want those who pray to do it by the pyramids.? His colleague nodded in agreement. ?Only God knows what religion they are.??
?
Still, some tourists were blissfully unaware of the controversial shutdown and the numerological meaning of the day.? Elizabeth Rospo from Nova Scotia almost missed seeing the pyramids.? She was on cruise and had only one day to catch the Egyptian Museum and the pyramids area.

?The guide was in constant contact with his office. They were worried about a protest but it never happened.? It didn?t affect our stay at all,? she said.

PFT: Dolphins won't let Texans have Rosenfels

Dallas Cowboys v New England PatriotsGetty Images

Several of his players expect Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan to leave Dallas and become a head coach elsewhere.

?I definitely believe so,? Cowboys safety Abram Elam told the Dallas Morning News. ?I think Rob should?ve been a head coach. I believe that?s his dream and he?s definitely been preparing himself for that. He?s been a good coach and I believe in him. I think he?ll do a good job.?

There?s little doubt that Ryan would jump at the opportunity if a team comes calling when the regular-season ends.

?I know Rob wants to be a head coach,? Cowboys safety Gerald Sensabaugh said. ?That?s every coach?s dream.?

If Rob Ryan does become an NFL head coach, he?ll be the third member of his nuclear family to do so, following his dad Buddy, who coached the Eagles and the Cardinals, and his brother Rex, head coach of the Jets.

?He?s a Ryan, so he has the pedigree, his whole family?s been coaching, everybody except his grandmother, he said,? Cowboys inside linebacker Bradie James said.

Ryan has had success as an assistant, so it?s easy to see why he?d be mentioned as a future head coach. However, it?s also easy to see why the personality traits that have made him one of the NFL?s best-known assistants (and have made his twin brother one of the NFL?s best-known head coaches) could also make it hard on him to get a head-coaching position.

Most NFL owners are old-fashioned men who believe a football coach should act a certain way, and look a certain way. Ryan?s wild statements to the media (not to mention his wild hairstyle) don?t necessarily fit with what owners envision when they picture their next head coach.

That?s not to say Ryan won?t become a head coach ? if his defenses continue playing well, it?s likely that he will. But some of those personality traits may give him trouble getting a head-coaching job, even if everything his players say about him is true.

Iranian diplomats set to leave UK after explusion (AP)

LONDON ? Iranian diplomats have chartered a plane and are expected to leave Britain on Friday, expelled by the U.K. government in retaliation for attacks on the British Embassy in Tehran.

Tehran's relations with Britain have become increasingly strained in recent months, largely due to tensions over Tehran's refusal to halt uranium enrichment ? a process that can lead to the development of nuclear weapons.

The diplomats will be flying out of Heathrow Airport on a chartered IranAir plane around 4 p.m., according to an employee of IranAir in London who refused to give his name because he said he was not allowed to speak to the media.

The roughly two dozen Iranian diplomats and their dependents will be welcomed back at the Tehran airport, Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency reported.

Images broadcast around the world Tuesday showed demonstrators tearing down Union Jack flags and brandishing a looted picture of Queen Elizabeth II at the U.K. embassy compound in Tehran. The incident has deepened Iran's isolation and significantly escalated tensions with the West.

Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said Wednesday afternoon he was giving Iranian diplomats 48 hours to leave the U.K.

Hague also pulled Britain's diplomats out of Iran following the embassy attack, and backed new sanctions on the Islamic republic. At least four other European countries, including Germany and France, also moved to reduce diplomatic contacts with Iran.

Hague has said the attacks were "clearly premeditated" by high-ranking officials, but claimed there were "divisions within the Iranian regime" about the move.

Iran's government has criticized the attacks, but hard-liners have spoken out in support of the protesters. Mohammad Mohammadian, a representative of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, praised the attackers, saying they had targeted the "epicenter of sedition."
