Abortion opponents march in Washington

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Anti-abortion demonstrators from around the country marched through Washington to the steps of the U.S. Supreme Court on Friday to protest a landmark court decision that legalized abortion.

The annual event took on added significance for many in the crowd because this year marks the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that created a constitutional right to abortion in some circumstances. The demonstrators, carrying signs with messages such as "Defend Life" and "Defund Planned Parenthood," shouted chants including "Hey, Hey, Ho, Ho, Roe v. Wade has got to go."

They packed sections of the National Mall and surrounding streets for the March of Life.

"I just felt this 40th year marked a huge anniversary for the law," said one demonstrator, Pam Tino, 52, of Easton, Mass, who also participated several years ago. "Forty is a very important year in the Bible as well, in terms of years in the desert. And I just felt like maybe this year (there) was going to be something miraculous that might happen. We might see something going forward with the cause."

With the re-election of President Barack Obama, she added, "we just have our walking papers. Now we just feel like we have to keep the battle up."

The large turnout reflected the ongoing relevance of the abortion debate four decades after the Jan. 22, 1973 decision.

It remains a divisive issue with no dramatic shift in viewpoint on either side; a new Pew Research Center poll finds 63 percent of U.S. adults opposed to overturning Roe, compared to 60 percent in 1992. Earlier this week, abortion opponents marked the anniversary of the court decision with workshops, prayers and calls for more limits on abortion rights. And even as Obama this week reaffirmed his commitment to "reproductive freedom," state legislatures continue to consider varied restrictions on a woman's ability to receive an abortion.

In Mississippi, for example, the state's only abortion clinic said it received notice Friday that the state intends to revoke its operating license. The clinic's operator has struggled to comply with a 2012 state law that requires anyone doing abortions at the clinic to be an OB-GYN with hospital admitting privileges.

Police do not provide crowd estimates, but organizers said hundreds of thousands may have turned out at Friday's rally in Washington.

Among the speakers at Friday's rally was Rick Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator and staunch abortion opponent who last year unsuccessfully sought the Republican presidential nomination.

He recalled the love and support the country showed for his young daughter, Bella, who was born with a serious genetic condition and whose illness led him to take some time off from the campaign trail. He cited his daughter's life ? "she is joyful, she is sweet, she is all about love" ? as a reason to discourage abortion even in instances when women are told that it would be "better" to have one.

"We all know that death is never better ? never better. Really what it's about is saying is it would be easier for us, not better for her," he said. "And I'm here to tell you ... Bella is better for us and we are better because of Bella."

He said the anti-abortion cause was made up of people who every day advocate for their position outside abortion clinics and at crisis pregnancy centers.

"This movement is not a bunch of moralizers standing on their mountaintop preaching what is right," Santorum said.

Rep. Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican, called Roe v. Wade "infamous, reckless and inhumane."

"The passage of time hasn't changed the fact that abortion is a serious, lethal violation of fundamental human rights," he said. "And that women and children deserve better. And that the demands of justice, generosity and compassion require that the right to life be guaranteed to everyone."

One demonstrator, Mark Fedarko, 44, of Cleveland, said he regularly stands outside of abortion clinics in hopes of discouraging women from going inside.

"There's God's law and man's law," he said. "But I follow God's law first. Like it says right here, thou shall not kill. That's the end of the story. We need to protect these children."

What does the future hold? Davos takes a guess

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Forget the endless debates about the euro or government debts. What does the future hold?

The World Economic Forum at Davos is always a showcase for new research, trends and ideas. Here's some predictions about the future from participants at the annual gathering of the world's elite:

WEATHER AND WATER

Climate change will lead to more and more extreme weather, which will cause tremendous economic upheaval, predicts New York University economist Nouriel Roubini.

"It's not just that New York is going to be underwater 30 years from now," he said, referring to the devastation caused last fall by Hurricane Sandy.

Oxford University physicist Tim Palmer ? who said as a scientist he preferred probabilities to prediction ? noted there is a 10- to 15-percent chance that the Earth will warm by 6 degrees Celsius within a century, leading to "catastrophic consequences for humanity" ranging from extreme weather to rising seas.

Vali Nasr, dean of the School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University, said many countries will start running out of water in the coming years.

"Water is the new oil," he said.

A TECHNOLOGICAL SURGE

Laura Tyson, a business professor at the University of California at Berkeley, said one of the great concerns should be "the employment effects of technology," with so many jobs being rendered obsolete by scientific or technological advances.

Discussions of such advances were everywhere at Davos.

Sebastian Thrun, a computer science professor at Stanford University and leader of Google's Self-Driving Car Project, said he thinks Google co-founder Sergey Brin's prediction that within five years driverless cars will be on the streets used by regular people is going to happen.

"It'll be a while before they're going to be mainstream, and there'll be all kinds of interesting questions coming about security, privacy, safety of the system as a whole," Thrun said. "But if they are available within five years for general consumers, I think within 15 years you ought to be able to buy one of those."

MENTAL ILLNESS UNDERSTOOD

Edward Boyden, an associate professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology who directs a neural engineering research group, says new technologies for analyzing the brain will produce significant advances in fighting mental illness.

"Right now we know that certain cell types in the brain are impaired in schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder or autism," he said.

If scientists can develop new technologies to image the brain and control the brain's cells, he said "over the next half-century or so we should be able to really understand how these networks" generate emotion.

Then, in the case of mental illness, "we can insert information into the cells in order to re-sculpt their dynamics and fix what's broken," Boyden said.

Technology entrepreneur Eric Anderson said biotechnology and medicine "are eventually going to be information sciences, with your genes... will determine treatment."

THE LIGHTEST STUFF

Julia Greer, an assistant professor of materials science and mechanics at the California Institute of Technology, says the world is craving a useful, ultra-superlight material to work with.

Her research group collaborated with Hughes Research Lab (HRL) and the University of California, Irvine, to recently develop the world's lightest solid material. She predicted that in 10 to 15 years it will be used as fuel cell catalysts, as acoustic damping devices on submarines, as anti-reflective layers in solar cells, and as components of vehicles sent into space.

The new material, called a micro-lattice, is made up of tiny hollow tubes of nickel-phosphorous that are angled to connect ? and contains 99 percent air, Greer said. It can also be used for high-temperature thermal batteries, heart stents and blood clot catchers, she said.

On a related topic, Roy Johnson, the chief technology officer for Lockheed Martin, predicted huge advances in 3-D printing.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE

One of the most famous predictions is Moore's Law, named after Intel co-founder Gordon Moore, which says that computing power doubles every two years or so. It has proven stunningly correct so far, putting new technological devices in everyone's pockets.

But how long will this law hold? Paul Jacobs, the CEO of Qualcomm, said it's not so certain anymore.

The implications of effectively infinite computing power are staggering ? no more waiting for a power-up or a download; every song, movie and TV episode instantly available; and even the possibility of what scientists call artificial intelligence.

But Jacobs told The Associated Press that the law might be valid only "a couple of more generations."

"I'm worried. In the next couple of nodes we're going to stop getting those numbers unless somebody figures out something," he said.

YOUTH OF THE WORLD UNITE

Former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, now the U.N. special envoy for global education, said huge advances in the Internet and technology are enabling young people to connect with each other and "this is opening up the world in a way that has never happened before."

"Young people are beginning to see that the gap between the opportunities and rights they have been promised and the opportunities and rights that are delivered to them is wholly unacceptable," he said at a session on the forum's sidelines. "And the sense that they are being deprived of these opportunities and rights is, I think, going to be the big motivating force over the next few years."

Ajith speaks about Society, Politics and Democracy

unseen billa2 ajith 3 Ajith speaks about Society, Politics and Democracy

The constitution of India declares India as a Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic republic assuring its citizens of justice, equality and liberty. Trend of the day is all the words have been cliched, misunderstood and misconstrued.

Secularism ? a system of political or social philosophy that rejects all forms of religious faith and worship. Is India a Secular nation or being played on the basis of vote bank politics.

Democracy and Secularism are being misunderstood as cliched words that are just adjectives for our nation. Time we lend our ears to the actual values that the country lives for.

Ajith has come out with a scathing statement questioning the state of democracy in the country. He believes that words like sovereign, socialist, secular, democratic are grossly misunderstood and misconstrued in the current scenario.

He wondered if India is really a secular country what with the vote bank style of politics, which is in vogue today. This statement comes in the wake of recent events where Kamal Hassan?s Vishwaroopam is being prevented from releasing in Tamil Nadu by certain Muslim political outfits.

Ajith feels it?s high time that we subscribed to the country?s actual values of justice, equality and liberty to all. The star has minced no words and made his disappointment clear.

Venezuela prison riot kills dozens: report

CARACAS (Reuters) - A jail riot in southwestern Venezuela killed dozens of people on Friday, local media reported, the latest incident in the ongoing crisis in the South American nation's crowded prisons.

Violence broke out after news of an inspection to confiscate weapons at the Centro Occidental jail, Prisons Minister Iris Varela said in a statement, without providing a death toll.

Local media reports say between 26 and 54 people were killed and dozens wounded.

A prisons ministry source told Reuters that "many" had been killed, including one national guard officer, but declined to offer more details. The source said the ministry would hold a news conference on Saturday with details.

The violence involved both a struggle between rival gangs for control of the jail and a confrontation between inmates and troops called in to calm the situation, Varela said.

Venezuelan prisons are controlled by armed gangs that have rioted repeatedly over the last several years due to disputes with jail authorities or prison leaders.

"Who is going to be blamed for this new massacre in one of our country's jails? Incompetent and irresponsible government," tweeted opposition leader Henrique Capriles.

The South American nation's 34 prisons were designed to hold around a third of the 50,000 inmates now in them, according to local prison advocacy groups. Many of the prisoners are armed and hundreds are killed each year in riots and gang fights.

A month-long siege occurred in 2011 at El Rodeo prison, just outside the capital of Caracas, when 22 died before some 5,000 soldiers restored order.

Why Market Your Business Online? | New Wave Web and Marketing

Adults are spending more and more time on the Internet ? many of them searching for information, advice, goods, and services and looking to connect with others in their community. This means that the obvious choice for businesses is to take their marketing efforts online. Online marketing can benefit your company or business in ways traditional marketing would not.

Don?t know where to start? Below are five steps that can get your business in the right direction:

1. Build a Website. This may be the most obvious step. After all, you can?t have an internet presence if you?re not online. You can either set up your own website or hire an established company to set it up for you. The website needs to have easily navigated layouts, be filled with useful and interesting information and be free of junk or unhelpful things. Avoid using anything that will discourage a customer from lingering; this is one time when some upfront paid advice from a web designer can be well worth it and will pay itself back in no time.

2. Make your Website SEO Friendly. the idea of search engine optimization (SEO) is to write your website?s copy (the content) in such a way that your site will appear high on the results pages of the major search engines (i.e. Google and Bing) when users perform specific keyword searches.

3. Use PPC Advertising. Online pay per click (PPC) advertising has a large reach and is the way many sites thrive or even survive online. You can set a price that you would be willing to pay every time someone clicks on an ad that you write. You only have to pay this when someone clicks on your ad. If no one clicks on your ad, you do not have to pay. These ad formats allow you to set up a daily advertising budget and you have the freedom to cancel and restart your ads any time you want.

4. Use Blogs and Forums to your Advantage. Blogging is another way to drive qualified traffic to your website and boost your site?s ranking in the search engines and it is a great?way to help promote your business or services ? especially if you can show yourself as an expert and as someone who genuinely wants to help resolve user?s problems. Often you can do this for free. However, this option has one huge caveat??be sure to post in forums that are website promotion friendly if you intend on using your URL or emblazoning the post with your business details. In many cases, simply stating that you?re the founder/owner/director/community manager, etc. of a certain site can be sufficient to alert people to the good your company is doing online. Let them do the rest of the adding up and finding of you??consumers are intelligent.

5. Participate in Social Media. If your business does not have a Facebook ?account, get one as asoon as possible. And make sure it is optimized to get the most from it. For Facebook, you can use ads, updates and Fan pages to keep fans posted on your business happenings.?As a business, just be careful to get your business a Facebook Page and not a Profile; profiles are for individual people only and they are limited in what you can do as a business. Once you have created your page, keep updates relevant and interesting ? you want users to be engaged in and share your content.?And it doesn?t just stop there ? you can continue onto Twitter, Google +, and LinkedIn. (Hint: these are great places to share information from your website, blog posts, and forums).?Creating a coordinated social media and website traffic-building strategy for your business is a big task, and you can hire professionals to help.

Teen spent much of day family slain at church

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) ? The New Mexico teen accused of killing his family and plotting to randomly gun down Wal-Mart shoppers spent much of the day after the early morning slayings at his church, wandering the campus as dozens of Sunday school teachers were being trained on how to deal with a shooter, a security official said.

But it wasn't until hours later, former police officer and Calvary Albuquerque security chief Vince Harrison said, that he knew something had gone terribly wrong.

Harrison, who led the safety training Saturday morning, said he was called back to the church Saturday evening after 15-year-old Nehemiah Griego told a pastor he found his family dead in their home.

"When I met Nehemiah, I knew something wasn't right," Harrison said Wednesday. "I could feel it, I could see it in his eyes and I could see it in his behavior and his demeanor so the red flags went up and that's when I called the sheriff's department."

Harrison said he drove Griego back to the family's rural southwest Albuquerque home to meet authorities, interviewing him along the way.

"He went into detail of where they were, where the guns were and he was very matter-of-fact, really cold so I knew something wasn't right," Harrison said.

After finding the bodies, sheriff's officials say, they took the teen do headquarters. During questioning, they say he confessed to shooting his mother and three younger siblings in their beds shortly after 1 a.m., then waiting in a bathroom with a military-style semi-automatic rifle to ambush his father upon his return from an overnight shift at a homeless shelter.

They say he also told them he had reloaded the family's rifles and taken them with him in the family van with plans to randomly shoot more people.

"That sends chills down my spine," Harrison said. "But obviously God had a different plan."

Harrison said several people spotted Griego at the church Saturday, but thought nothing of it until his arrest. He said officials then reviewed security video and found the teen had spent much of the day there.

He said he doesn't know why Griego decided to come to the church, but that it was like a second home for the boy, who was schooled at his house.

"It was a familiar place to him," Harrison said. "I think if he did have in his mindset to do something foolish and start shooting people there also, I think his demeanor was tamed a little bit because he saw people there he knew."

Sheriff Dan Houston said Tuesday there was no indication Griego intended to harm anyone at the church.

A candlelight vigil was being held at the church Wednesday night for victims Greg Griego, 51, his wife, Sarah Griego, 40, and three of their children - a 9-year-old boy, Zephania Griego, and daughters Jael Griego, 5, and Angelina Griego, 2.

Before the start of the vigil, members of the crowd shared hugs and handshakes as photographs of the victims were displayed on large digital screens at the front of the church. An estimated 2,000 people attended and nearly every seat was filled before the start of the hour-long service.

Relatives in a statement Tuesday night said they were heartbroken, and remembered the teen as a bright and talented musician who played guitar, drums and bass with the church choir. He also was a champion wrestler who dreamed of following his family's long tradition of military service, and a boy who accompanied his pastor father on rescue missions to Mexico, they said.

"We have not been able to comprehend what led to this incredibly sad situation. However, we are deeply concerned about the portrayal in some media of Nehemiah as some kind of a monster."

The statement, emailed by the boy's uncle, Eric Griego, called on the media and the public not to use 15-year-old Nehemiah Griego "as a pawn for ratings or to score political points."

"He is a troubled young man who made a terrible decision that will haunt him and his family forever," the statement said.

PlugBug World brings global travel to the MacBook USB charger

Globetrotting Mac users looking to slightly condense their cable packing will no doubt be happy to learn that the outlet-obsessed folks at Twelve South have announced the launch of the PlugBug World. The latest version of the hybrid charger adds five international plugs (US / Canada / Japan, UK / Hong Kong / Singapore, Continental Europe, Australia / New Zealand and China) to the combo MacBook / USB charger. Interested parties can pick one up now through Twelve South's site for $45 -- or £39.99 / €44.99, depending on which part of the world you're in at the moment. The domestic version of PlugBug, meanwhile, will run you $35. There's a press release after the break for your perusal.

Show full PR text

The new PlugBug World delivers dual charging convenience to everyone, while making any MacBook Power Adapter ready for global travel.

Twelve South is pleased to unveil PlugBug World, an all-in-one USB iPad/iPhone charger that converts any MacBook Power Adapter into a dual charger that can be used globally. The powerful PlugBug World piggybacks onto your MacBook power adapter, allowing you to simultaneously charge your MacBook and iPad or iPhone from one electrical outlet. This world version of the PlugBug charger includes five international snap-on plugs for use in the UK, Europe, Australia, China, and North America. PlugBug World is compatible with all Apple MacBook Power Adapters and is available now at twelvesouth.com for $44.99 / £39.99 / 44,99 €. More info and images can be found at www.twelvesouth.com.

PlugBug World is an international version of the popular Twelve South PlugBug. PlugBug World brings the dual charging convenience of PlugBug to Mac users everywhere. PlugBug uses the clever trick of attaching to any Apple MacBook Power Adapter by replacing its attached plug or extended power cord. When snapped into place, PlugBug not only allows for worldwide charging of MacBook, but also provides a separate 2.1-Amp USB charger for iPad/iPhone. Once attached, simply select your local plug, or use your extended cable, to power both your MacBook and iPad or iPhone from a single outlet. This powerful accessory is a lifesaver in locations where finding multiple wall outlets can be a challenge, and where charging your MacBook and iPad quickly is mission-critical to your next meeting or presentation.

PlugBug World works as a stand-alone international wall charger, too. Rather than pulling out a MacBook to charge your iPhone or iPad, simply use PlugBug World. PlugBug World can charge your iPad up to four times faster than a MacBook and your iPad mini up to twice as fast as its included charger.

The bright red PlugBug World is easy to spot in a sea of white adapters in your bag or on the wall at the airport. Because PlugBug World charges MacBook plus iPad or iPhone at the same time, you can purge the number of power cords and international converters you carry. And since MacBook USB ports are precious commodities on the road and in the office, PlugBug's extra USB charger is a welcome addition.

Since the release of the original PlugBug, many notable MacBook power users have made PlugBug an essential part of their travel gear. Andy Ihnatko, technology journalist for the Chicago Sun-Times, called the PlugBug "an exceptional product" that "has not been off my charger since I got it." Steve Sande from TUAW said, "Twelve South took a charger - and used the Apple adage to "Think Different" to create something that is extremely useful and attractive." And John Gruber, of Daring Fireball, exclaimed "How in the world did no one think of this before?" With PlugBug World, the convenience of PlugBug is finally available to international travelers and customers alike.

Andrew Green, Creative Director of Twelve South said, "PlugBug World adapts your MacBook for international travel for about the same price as the other adapter kits - but with the bonus of an extra USB charger. My USB ports get used up very quickly on the road for Internet access and Jump Drives. PlugBug gives me an extra USB charger without wasting precious MacBook USB ports on something as silly as charging. And because it's connected right to my MacBook charger - I don't forget it at home either."

Whether you're an international traveler or you just want the convenience of PlugBug in your part of the world, PlugBug World is ready to add one more handy tool to your MacBook travel pack. PlugBug World includes the PlugBug Charger, five international plugs and travel bag for holding it all. PlugBug World is the perfect solution for powering up your MacBook and iPhone or iPad wherever you may roam. PlugBug World is available at twelvesouth.com now for $44.99, and soon at The Apple Store and Apple Authorized Resellers worldwide. For those who use their MacBooks in the US, Canada and Japan the original PlugBug is still available for $34.99.

Designing a Zen-like Patio | Home Improvement

If your backyard and patio are dull and drab, then consider updating the space and making it an extension of your indoor living space. When friends venture out into the yard and onto the patio, two things will instantly catch their eyes: the fire pit and the patio furniture. It doesn?t matter how stunning your fire pit or fire table is; if the furniture is terrible, the ambiance is ruined. If you have a sleek fire table made of onyx, but your patio furniture looks worthy of the dump, you might as well have an old card table out there in its place. But by investing in stylish patio furniture, you can create the stunning, inviting look you have always wanted. By visiting All Backyard Fun Outdoor Furniture, you can explore your options and find the right patio furniture to compliment your style.

Make your choice

When it comes to creating your outdoor sanctuary, picking the right furniture is key. The most common types of outdoor furniture include chairs, lounges, sofa sectionals, tables and patio dining sets. These also come in a variety of styles and materials. When deciding on patio furniture, think about your local weather. If you live in a place that is sunny year-around, then you wont need to be too concerned with what furniture types hold up well in rain. If you live in Seattle, however, you may want to avoid getting wrought iron, as it rusts when exposed to ongoing rain. Wicker is an excellent option, as it is durable and can withstand weather conditions. Also, consider getting darker colored furniture, as it will not show dirt or wear as easily as light colored furniture will.
Another thing to consider is maintenance. In an article by Consumer Reports the author advices shoppers to determine the maintenance requirements for the furniture they consider purchasing. The article advises consumers that a simple wash with warm, soapy water will work for most outdoor furniture. You can even use a hose to blast out debris caught between wicker strands on furniture. However, if you want teak furniture, the author warns that if left uncared for, the teak will weather to a silvery gray. If you want to keep it looking as good as new, you will have to sand the furniture and apply teak oil on an annual basis.

The rest of the space

Once you have your patio furniture, invest in a fire feature like a fire table or a fire pit. It, and the furniture, will be the showpiece of your outdoor space. Also, be sure to do a little landscaping. Experiment with plant color and texture. Arguably the most important thing you can do is making sure there is fluency between the inside of the home and the outside. Let the style of your home?s interior pour out onto the patio; continue with the same architectural features, themes, colors, and textures. Also, add flare here and there. Some candles, a chandelier and some soothing wind chimes will help offer that Zen-like retreat where you can escape from the hectic chaos of every day life.

(AP) ? The Islamist militants who attacked a natural gas plant in the Sahara wore Algerian army uniforms, memorized the layout of the vast complex and included two Canadians and a team of explosives experts ready to blow the place sky-high, Algeria's prime minister said Monday.

The operation also appeared to have help from the inside ? a former driver at the plant, he said.

Algeria offered a grim toll in the attack, saying that 38 hostages and 29 militants died in four days of mayhem. The dead hostages included seven Japanese workers and three energy workers each from the U.S. and Britain.

Three of the attackers were captured and five foreign workers remain unaccounted for, the prime minister told reporters at a news conference in Algiers, the capital.

Monday's account offered the first Algerian government narrative of the four-day standoff, from the moment of the attempted bus hijacking to the moment when the attackers began to prepare to explode bombs across the massive gas plant that sprawled over 5 square kilometers ( 2 square miles).

All but one of the dead hostages ? an Algerian driver ? were foreigners. The prime minister said three attackers were captured but did not specify their nationalities or their conditions or say where they were being held.

He said the Islamists included a former driver at the complex who was from Niger and that the militants "knew the facility's layout by heart."

The militants had said during the standoff that their band included people from Canada, and hostages who had escaped recalled hearing at least one of the militants speaking English with a North American accent.

In addition to the Canadians, the militant cell included men from Egypt, Mali, Niger, Mauritania and Tunisia, as well as three Algerians.

"You may have heard the last words of the terrorist chief," Algerian Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal told reporters. "He gave the order for all the foreigners to be killed, so there was a mass execution, many hostages were killed by a bullet to the head."

A total of three Americans died in the attack and seven made it out safely, a U.S. official in Washington said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly. Their bodies have been recovered, the official said.

The attack began early Wednesday with the attempted hijacking of two buses filled with workers outside the complex. Under assault from Algerian forces, the militants moved on the main complex, armed with missiles, mortars and bombs for their three explosives experts, Sellal said.

He praised the quick wits of a guard who set of an alarm that stopped the flow of gas and warned workers of an imminent attack.

"It was thanks to him that the factory was protected," he said.

Five foreigners remained unaccounted for, Sellal said. Japan's prime minister said Monday seven Japanese citizens were killed and three others are missing.

Sellal said the facility had 790 Algerian workers and 134 foreigners from 26 countries. The Algerians were freed early in the standoff ? former hostages said the attackers immediately separated out the foreigners, forcing some to wear explosive belts.

The prime minister said the heavily armed militants came from Mali carrying a great deal of explosives and mined the facility. They had prepared the attack for two months.

Sellal justified the helicopter attack Thursday on vehicles filled with hostages out of the fear the kidnappers were attempting to escape.

The Algerian special forces assault on the refinery on Saturday that killed the last group of militants and hostages came after the kidnappers attempted to destroy the complex.

In a statement, the Masked Brigade, the group that claimed to have masterminded the takeover, has warned of more such attacks against any country backing France's military intervention in neighboring Mali, where the French are trying to stop an advance by Islamic extremists.

Sellal said the militants had expected to return to Mali with the foreign hostages. Seven French citizens taken hostage in recent years are thought to be held by al-Qaida linked groups in northern Mali.

"Their goal was to kidnap foreigners," Sellal said. "They wanted to flee to Mali with the foreigners but once they were surrounded they started killing the first hostages."

The operation was led by an Algerian, Amine Benchenab, who was known to security services and was killed during the assault, he added. Sellal said negotiating was essentially impossible.

"They led us into a real labyrinth, in negotiations that became unreasonable," he said.

Readers Write: Zero Dark Thirty fails to take moral stand; Founding Fathers' compromise on faith

Letters to the Editor for the weekly print issue of January 21, 2013: Films like Kathryn Bigelow's?Zero Dark Thirty should take a better moral stand on torture. America's Founding Fathers knew the art of compromise ? even on issues of faith.

Films must take moral stand on torture

It was refreshing to read movie critic Peter Rainer's principled opinion on Kathryn Bigelow's movie "Zero Dark Thirty" ("Tasty fan fare: our critic's picks from 2012," Dec. 31, 2012 & Jan. 7, 2013). Mr. Rainer rightly says the film's "torture scenes, and their consequences, are calculatedly deficient in any political context."

Unfortunately, there will always be times when detainees won't be treated as humanely as they should be treated. But Americans should never sanction institutionalized and premeditated cruelty against those who have been restrained and thus pose no immediate threat to their fellow humans. To go the next step and glamorize such behavior without taking a moral stand on it is unconscionable.

Founders, faith, and compromise

The Dec. 24 cover heading "The New Face of Faith" and the photograph of Americans at prayer are connected in my mind with the commentary by Stephen W. Stathis in the same issue, "Let's learn to compromise as the Founders did." How to balance a belief in God with religious freedom was on everyone's mind at the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia during the summer of 1787. Many of those present would speak personally of providence and the hand of God, but they did not put any name for God in America's written Constitution.

At this convention, Benjamin Franklin spoke in June of the "divine protection" that had been present at the time of the Revolution. He then suggested that each day of the convention start with a prayer. Only two or three of the 55 delegates agreed with him. A public prayer was not said.

However, in 1774 at the first session of the Continental Congress, Samuel Adams moved that a prayer be said the next day by the Rev. Jacob Duch?, an Episcopal clergyman, and his motion passed. Duch? did give a prayer the next day. Thus America's Founders compromised on the prayer question and continued to do so in different ways during that crucial time in US history.

Martin Luther King Day: How far is America along road to the 'dream'?

Problems that disproportionately beset black Americans ? poverty, broken families, prison time ? have barely nudged during the Obama administration. But Martin Luther King Day is also an occasion to recognize progress for the black community.

President Obama began his second presidential term on Monday by laying his hand upon two Bibles: One was used by Abraham Lincoln, the other belonged to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., the ?traveling" Bible that the civil rights leader carried on marches.

Those two volumes are symbolic bookends to America?s past 150 years, especially when combined with Mr. Obama?s own achievement as the first African-American president of a former slave nation.?But if Lincoln helped America correct its course by emancipating the slaves, it?s Dr. King?s ?dream? of equal rights and a color-blind society that seems more fundamental today ? Martin Luther King Day ? as America's first black president begins another four years at the helm of the world?s most powerful republic.

To be sure, Obama has had to carry the burden of black America?s continuing problems, and his legacy may yet be tainted by the economic malaise that has idled nearly one-quarter of all able-bodied black workers ? an unemployment rate twice that of white America. Other problems that disproportionately beset the African-American community ? poverty, broken families, high incarceration rates ? have also barely nudged under Obama. And in some political quarters, racial tensions have ticked up under Obama.

Yet as Americans take stock of the moment, the change that has swept across the country in the four decades since the onset of the civil rights movement is stunning and a testament to an inherent American goodness that King recognized and reinforced in his speeches and marches.?

?We are far from achieving the perfection of Dr. King?s ?Dream? but that is no reason to ignore how far we have come,? writes Fox News contributor and Washington media veteran Juan Williams, who is black. ?Even now, as we see shifting demographics seeding racial tension in some precincts, the country is still moving forward. The United States is a good country. This nation still labors to achieve the vision of Dr. King and President Reagan ? the shining city on a hill.?

Ronald Reagan signed legislation establishing Martin Luther King Day as a federal holiday in 1983, a moment when many people came to recognize King as a pivotal and aspirational figure for all of America, not just as a leader of blacks who championed their civil rights. King, whose words in the inspiriational ?I have a dream? speech and the philosophical ?Letter from a Birmingham Jail? lifted up a nation, was assassinated in Memphis,Tenn., on April 4, 1968.

Since then, America?s black middle class has become larger and more influential, especially in places like Atlanta, King's home town. America?s black middle class is now ?the wealthiest, best-educated community of black people in the world,? writes Mr. Williams.

Yet, on this confluence of MLK Day and Obama?s inauguration, some Americans suggest that the president may be less the benefactor of King?s ?dream? and more its modern-day standard-bearer.

Large numbers of African-Americans attended Monday?s inauguration on the National Mall in Washington, and some said that young, low-income blacks, especially, relate to Obama because they see him defending opportunities and government help for those who are struggling.

One form of neuron turned into another in brain

Jan. 20, 2013 ? A new finding by Harvard stem cell biologists turns one of the basics of neurobiology on its head -- demonstrating that it is possible to turn one type of already differentiated neuron into another within the brain.

The discovery by Paola Arlotta and Caroline Rouaux "tells you that maybe the brain is not as immutable as we always thought, because at least during an early window of time one can reprogram the identity of one neuronal class into another," said Arlotta, an Associate Professor in Harvard's Department of Stem Cell and Regenerative Biology (SCRB).

The principle of direct lineage reprogramming of differentiated cells within the body was first proven by SCRB co-chair and Harvard Stem Cell Institute (HSCI) co-director Doug Melton and colleagues five years ago, when they reprogrammed exocrine pancreatic cells directly into insulin producing beta cells.

Arlotta and Rouaux now have proven that neurons too can change their mind. The work is being published on-line Jan. 20 by the journal Nature Cell Biology.

In their experiments, Arlotta targeted callosal projection neurons, which connect the two hemispheres of the brain, and turned them into neurons similar to corticospinal motor neurons, one of two populations of neurons destroyed in Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease. To achieve such reprogramming of neuronal identity, the researchers used a transcription factor called Fezf2, which long as been known for playing a central role in the development of corticospinal neurons in the embryo.

What makes the finding even more significant is that the work was done in the brains of living mice, rather than in collections of cells in laboratory dishes. The mice were young, so researchers still do not know if neuronal reprogramming will be possible in older laboratory animals -- and humans. If it is possible, this has enormous implications for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases.

"Neurodegenerative diseases typically effect a specific population of neurons, leaving many others untouched. For example, in ALS it is corticospinal motor neurons in the brain and motor neurons in the spinal cord, among the many neurons of the nervous system, that selectively die," Arlotta said. "What if one could take neurons that are spared in a given disease and turn them directly into the neurons that die off? In ALS, if you could generate even a small percentage of corticospinal motor neurons, it would likely be sufficient to recover basic functioning," she said.

The experiments that led to the new finding began five years ago, when "we wondered: in nature you never seen a neuron change identity; are we just not seeing it, or is this the reality? Can we take one type of neuron and turn it into another?" Arlotta and Rouaux asked themselves.

Over the course of the five years, the researchers analyzed "thousands and thousands of neurons, looking for many molecular markers as well as new connectivity that would indicate that reprogramming was occurring," Arlotta said. "We could have had this two years ago, but while this was a conceptually very simple set of experiments, it was technically difficult. The work was meant to test important dogmas on the irreversible nature of neurons in vivo. We had to prove, without a shadow of a doubt, that this was happening."

The work in Arlotta's lab is focused on the cerebral cortex, but "it opens the door to reprogramming in other areas of the central nervous system," she said.

Arlotta, an HSCI principal faculty member, is now working with colleague Takao Hensch, of Harvard's Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology, to explicate the physiology of the reprogrammed neurons, and learn how they communicate within pre-existing neuronal networks.

"My hope is that this will facilitate work in a new field of neurobiology that explores the boundaries and power of neuronal reprogramming to re-engineer circuits relevant to disease," said Paola Arlotta.
